Police Court Cases Range From a Bundle of Wood to a Horse. Several cases involving various kinds of theft were heard in Judge Miller's court yes- terday, and the articles ranged in size and value from a three-cent bundle of wood to a 150 horse. In the case involving the theft of the horse there were two defendants. They were Frank Nichols, a colored man about forty years old, and John H. Jones, colored, nineteen years old. Both the man and boy showed evidence of insanity, and when they appeared before the court the boy was smoking a cigarette. On their way up the steps the man struck the boy astunning blow in the eye, and it was with difficulty that the officers prevented a serious disturbance. Yesterday morning about 2 o'clock the boy entered the premises of tie Union stock yards, at Benning, on horseback. “Where ‘did you come from?” Policeman Kenny asked him. ‘exaa,” was v. “Where did you pore the horse?” “None of your — business.” Just then the man rushed in'from the gate, where he had been whistling. He threw off his shoes and proceeded to lay low the officer, but the latter was too quick for him and the man went down, ‘The peculiar actions of the prisoners tinued all day yesterday, and this m Nichols imagined ‘himself worth millions wanted to buy the conrt house. He com- plained to Officer Wortz and the latter ar Tested him, Davis was given four months in jail without fine. Larceny from the was charged against Frank Peters and he plead not guilty. Aaron Lindsey charged that last Thursday while on his way through the Smithsonian grounds Petersand a colored boy robbed him of $3. LONG LIST OF BOATS That Have Arrived and Left the Port—Mass Meeting at Mount Zion Church—St. John’s ‘Church to Be Improved — Good Work of the Police. ———— The remarkable activity all along the Chesa- Peake and Ohio canal savors strongly, so say old inhabitants, of the good old times when the iron horse had no wings. The lists of arrivals and departures, both at Cumberiand and Georgetown, are long and show heavy tonnage. The increase in boats is over 100 per cent above last season, and the increase in the tonnage of coal even greater, because of the increased capacity of the barges, owing to the improved depth and general condition of the waterway. The same increase notea between Cumberland and Georgetown prevails between Cumberland and other points. Especially is this the case between Cumberland and Williamsport. Canal officials are in high feather. Boats to arrive at Georgetown on June 2 were: Barge A. W. Nicholson, Capt. Wm. Hill; barge No. 137, Capt. A. Hill; J. A. Canfield, Capt. J. Ward; BT. Catholic Tenleytown and even many who professed other faiths turned out in numbers last night to assist in making the opening of St. Anne's six-day fairan auspicious one. The whole lower part of the town hall was given u) to booths and tables, and behind ‘them in all attractiveness were those who could not be re- sisted, particularly when ebarity seasoned their mute requests to buy. At those who have been selected to superintend the tables are ‘Misses Edith Poore, Mary Stadtler, Dollie Har- yey, Mary French, Mamie Harper, Allie Pholen — Mesdames Renneil, Yates and L Shoema- er. ‘The most enjoyable part of the evening was that given up to the entertainment farnished bs the Linthicum Elocution Club, being a rep- ctition of a part of the program presented 80 snecessfully in Georgetown a few weeks ago for the purpose of purchasing scenery, make-up boxes, “Tne Close Shave,” with James A.
