The little folks are especially plentiful in that congregation, which is the largest and has the reputation of being the liveliest aggregation of Methodism in the Dis- trict of Columbia, and they turned out in great, force to celebrate the occasion in which there is such deep general interest. He Spoke Eloquently on “Christian Ele- ments in Modern Literature.” Last evening before a fair-sized audience, among whom were a number of Catholic cler- gymen, the Rev. William Barry, D. D., the well-known English writer, delivered an inter- esting lecture at Carroll Hail under the auspices of the Catholic Univorsity, his subject being “Christian Elements in Modern Literature.” Modern literature, said Dr. Barry, owed all it had of the humane and beautiful to the in- fluence of Christianity. Contrasting the re- sults of the French and American revolutions, as shown in the literature of the two countries, the speaker said that in France everything had been secularized, and it seemed for a time that religion had been entirely thrown aside; but, even at this time, the voice of Chateaubriand, rising superior to those of Voltaire and Rous- sean, had recalled the people to what they were about to abandon. Still, while French litera- fare was full of life and. colo, it was lneking in heart—the result of this relapse from Chris- tianity. Referring to romanticism, Dr. Barry said that oven that of Sir Walter Seott and George Eliot had been all powerful in reviving the golden glory of oliciam, while the poets, with the tion of Coleridge, Shelley and Words- the “poets of revalt,” found more in the than in cold Protestant creeds. And among the American writers Hawthorne and Longteliow in “Evangeline” and “The Marble Faun” had pictured the glories of Catholicism, although one felt that they stood outside, being word painters and not Catholics. Dickens, George Eliot and Carlyle, brought up in the gloomiest forms of dissent, had relapsed from faith except in humanity and the dominion of duty. Herbert Spencer's ideal democracy was religious community on a large scale, while John Henry Newman had imbibed the full spirit of the church. ‘Tennyson worshiped with his father amid the bustle of modern life; Browning had written some of the most touching verses on Catholl- cism, while John Ruskin had reviewed in litera- ture the glory of Catholic art aud architecture. Dr. Barry advised the wider reading of the literature of the world, for he believed that there were other deys for preaching besides Sundays and other preachers worth listening to besides the clergy. EDWIN MILLERS SUICIDE. Ended His Life Bullet. Yesterday morning about 2 o'clozk = sad tragedy was exacted in the home of Mr. Edwin Muller, the florist, on Lincola avenue, some distanee this side of Glenwood cemetery. Beside him was a 92-caliber re- volver and a close inspection showed that two ballets had enteretl the man and caused his death. The officers were unable to obtain s satisfac- explanation from the widow of the death of hor husband, but they ascertained that Mra. Yesterday Detective Rhodes made an investigation of the affair and was fully convinced tha: there was no reason to believe that Miller died in any manner other than by his own hands. filler was away from home during the earlior part of the night. He left home to make some purchases, buying a new suit of clothes among other things. His wife retired enrly, and when he returned home about mid- night he called his wife and asked her if there was any beer in the house, as he was very tired. She got up and got him the beer and thon r turned to bed, after drinking a part of one glass of the beverage. Later on she called to on the sofa and would remain there. About 2 o'clock, when she called to him again, she re- ceived no response, and so she went to see what was the matter and found that he waa dead. Detective Rhodes after making a thorough investigation of the affair'said he thought the domestic troubles of the man caused him to end his life. Under the circumstances the coroner deemed an inquest unnecessary, and gave a certificate of death from suicide. ‘The funeral of tke dead man will take place tomorrow afternoon. pane ee ArtExtrox is specially called to sale of house No. 305 10th street southwest at auction on | Tuesday, June 6.at5 p.m. This a a house of | fourteen rooms, press-brick front.with all mod- | ern improvemente, and a very desirable place of residence.
