NOES permanent circulation in Washingten three Umes larger than that efany ether paper in lecal NEWS paper and Ad- it has no cempetiter. Of the many anniversaries that mark the progress of American history and which may healthily be remembered by the American peo- ple nono is of more real importance than is ‘Memorial Day, for in the full seope’ of its ob- gervance may be included all the other great national holidays, and in the sentiments now temporarily conspicuous will be found a deeper, broader patriotism than marks any other of our €elebrations. Instituted orginally in honor of ‘those who gave their lives to preserve the ‘Union, it has expanded and so increased its comprehensiveness as to include not only the il- Justrious dead of generations long gone, but also ‘those who knew not fame in any form. Soon the thirtieth day of May in cach year the people go out and strew flowers over the graves of those ‘whom they loved and the tombs beneath which are the remains of men whose memories they have learned to revere. Some mounds are hid- Gen beneath lavish contributions of the bright- est blossoms, while others know no decoration ome one evening only to die daring the night, too weak even to ring for assistance. another case a man of millions, with = family away at one of the fashionable resorts, succumbed to the heat and was found dead the following afternoon. In the other two cases the blow came not so suddenly, but yot within a week. And in cach instance the families knew not that the mainsprings of their supports were ill until they were dead. Perhaps the presence of mother, wife or daughter might not have stayed the hand of death, but who will deny the efficiency of womanly care in sickness?” But how would matters be improved by having the wives and children remain in the same sweltering atmosphero which Mr. Bok belisves was too much for the men. It is everywhere accepted as gospel that mothers and children are the better for summer resi- dence in the mountains or on the seashore. Shall they in future remain at home because disease (which is often sought when the con- trolling influences that keep some men respect- able are absent) came suddenly and fatally to a few whom business compelled to stay in the city? Let the tired-out wives and little ones enjoy the pure breezes and the change of scene, and if the husband and father cannot be with them let him take things as coolly as possible in the place where his lot is cast. —_ +2 —___. Under the elms ‘will be eulogistic oratory and the harmonies of grief-attuned praise; beneath the willows, ‘way from the multitude, the widow and the ‘@rphan will deck the sod that covers him who | ‘was more to them than all others and, perhaps, find some consolation in the valor which laid him low. Time, which ameliorates sorrow, has done much to lighten the gloom that is alwars consequent upon battle-field heroism, and asour plood-cemented national structure assumes pro- Portions greater than the forefathers dreamed of there is less of grief and more of honor for the manhood which so willingly and so nobly sacrificed itself; the “boys in blue” whose souls could not be shamed by their love of peace, whose natural desire to avoid strife failed toun- @ermine their integrity, whose allegiance to ¢ountry was supreme. So long as Memorial Duy continues to be-there need be no fears as to & possible decline of patriotism. The nation that remembers its heroic dead will neither for- t nor despise the liberties for which their were cheerfully exchanged. ——— Gen. Bradiey T. Johnson, who rendered the confederacy such distinguished service, has raised his voice for reform, but unless the American variety of human nature undergoes Fadical and speedy change the last of the vet- erans of whom he makes complaint will have eromed the river and be storming the heights of eternity before this new kind of reform gets into ‘working order. Commenting cn a proposition fo give bim exalted rank in the benevolent organization known as the United Confederate ‘Veterans, with which effort is being made to consolidate the Confederate Society of Mary- Jund, Gen. Johnson, speaking for the latter, said: “We want ali rank obliterated for J think pnd they think that a private soldier in the Maryland line equaled in valor, in patriotism and in sacrifice any officer, from Gen. Bradley Johnson to the short corporal on the left. think that the plurality of confederate colonels since the war tends to burlesque them. Itis well known that in Baltimore and New ‘York there are living now encugh colonels to officer both armies, and the United Confederate ‘Veterans seems to be a factory of generals and eolonels. Hardly a day passes by without there being @hronicled the death of some officer who was feally prominent in warfare, and yet there are more gererals and colonels now than the War Departments of both governments knew when Generals and colonels were in demand, ——_rem If ex-Representative Tom Watson of Georgia | nos “where he is at” some of his comments | on political methods in his state ought to make | somebedy squirm.
