When the Grand Army encampment was held im Washington last fall many of the veterans from the north and west took occasion to make excursions over the Virginia battle- fields and especially to visit Richmond, where the closing scenes of the confed- eracy were enacted. ‘Tho attention shown to these veterans of the Union army by the | Confederate Veterans’ Association of Rich- mond was so marked and their, hospitality was #0 cordial that they added greatly to the success of the Grand Army encampment as a historic event. The Grand Army encampment commit- tee of Washington after closing up their busi- ness decided to give some suitable recognition of the kindly spirit shown and the hospitable endeavors made by the veterans of the confederacy in Richmond. To carry out this resolve « committee of ten, with Mr. Edson at ite head, was appointed to prepare and pre- sent a suitable testimonial. AN ATTEMPT TO SEE THE PRESIDENT. It has been supposed that an appeal would be made to the President for executive clemency in Schneider's case, and shortly after 1 o'clock today Mr. Mattingly and Mr. Hoebling, Schnei- der’s attorneys, called at the White House and sent in their cards to Private Secretary Thur- ber. It was generally understood that they sought an interview in reference to the Schuei- der ease. ‘They remained with Mr. Thurber for about five minutes and when they came out Mr. Mat-| tingly was asked by a Stan reporter it he had culled about Schneider's case: “No,” he replied, “I came to see about the new Conrt of Appeals.” In answer to another question he stili insisted that he was at the White House on business other than Schneider's. Private Secretary Thurber was asked whether ‘Mr. Mattingly and Mr. Hoebling had called about Schneider. He hesitated for « moment and replied that he bad no authority to answer that question and referred the reporter to Mr. Mattingly.
