2 ) =—_! ' THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON. D. C. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 8, 1893 A PLEASANT SURPRISE PARTY. A Handsome Present to Ex-Secratary Rusk by the Agricultural Department Emploses. Ex-Secretary and Mrs. Rusk were treated to | & pleasant surprise party last night when about | 200 employes of the Agricultaral Departmeat took possession of their residence on Massa- chusetts avenue. There was speedily de- posited on the parlor table = waiter bearing nix solid silver pisces, composing a complete tea service. Mr. and Mra. Rusk received their first intimation of the presentation from the remarks of Mr. Willit tation. Said Mr. Willive: We wished to give you a parting testimonial of our esteem, to express ina small degree at | least our high appreciation for the kind acts and deeds that you have manifested to usin the last four years, We wanted something tan- | WW. and visible to remind you that there are | ria: ible hearts back here that throb for you and think | of you. We shall never forget you. We hope you never will forget us. Secretary Rusk made a reply full of feeling, in which he by the department during his admmistration to the intelligent and cordial support ever afforded bim by his late associates. He as- sured them thathe needed no reminder of | \W them and of the nt days spent with them aonial of their regard, it would ever be rather idence of the kind feeling toward him- Mrs. Rusk #0 beautifally expressed by his friend and co-laborer, Mr. Willits, than as reminder of those who would always have a| warm place in his heart. lio ‘The waiter bears an engraving of the main building of the department, with the initials wee “J. M. R.,” which are repeated on each piece of the set. The plate on the case bears the fol- | lowing inscription: | Presented to Hon. J. M. Rusk (1889—Secretary | of Agricuiture—1898) from his inte associates in the United States Department of Agriculture, ssa mark of their esteem and regard. Wash-| ington, D. C., March 6, 1843. There were great breaks, sometimes several Diccks im length, at various points in the inau- wural parade columu, and as a neceseary se} Ww: quence there was useless and inexcusable ex- | posure of the President and of those who were | W. delayed in the line of march. All this results | 818 14-b st. nw from the sily custom of having the marshals | end ail their grand marshal, where they may be very orna- ental. but are of ni: tributed along the column, cach having a| certain pecuon of it in charge, checking it welen necewar, and Keeping i: properly clawed | up. Ths disfiguring mterv halts might be avoided and the parade be ren- | dered much more imyo-ing. So faras I saw there was not a single aid along the line; onct formed the procession was apparently ieft to | take care of itself. Let me al Ji the attention of command- | ers, and especially of the colonels of Pennsyi | Yania regiments, to the fact that troops march- | ing in columns of companie- at half company | Cute" prevent @ far finer appearance than | off asta: when the companies are widely separated. The United States marines passed the President in this formation, thus saving time and space. The Pennsylvanians marched past ina very dragging fashion, much strung out, and though | some companies preser ed their alignment | th finely and moved evenly, they al bad a short, siow and spiritiess step, in marked contrast to | ly stride of the Maryland and New York | the hi men. This isa failing of troops drilled for the most part in armories, and surprised me in sol- diers having the experience of the Pennsylva- nia National Guard. It may seem ungracious to growl, but pro- ote is only made by noting and correcting fects. It does not seem at present as if Americans bad a talent for “processing” on large scale. H.
