Neilie Wilson Shir-Cliff, first soprano; Miss Ruth Thompson, | second soprano; Mra. E. R. The success attained | | | by the old organization was something | phenomenal in regard to combinations | of female singers, and even after some| | changes in the membership were made it | maintained a high reputat But it finally | broke up and the name of the St. Cecilias was | but a memory until it was revived by the ladies | who appeared last night. In the meantime the Philharmonic Ladies’ Quartet bad come into existence and bad acquired great popularity, their voices being young, fresh and well bal- anced. The present St. Cecilias have good in- dividual voices and the work of the ladies last night both in solo and concerted numbers was weil applauded, encores being numerous. They were assisted by Mr. John P. Lawrence, pian- ist, who played Chopin's “Scherzo” in C shar] | minor and Rubenstein’s “Barcarolle” in | minor, the latter receiving an emphatic en- core. The whole concert was evidently enjoyed | by a cultured audience. | Eoxrr axp Junvsacen is the title of a new lecture by Rev. Wm. Chester of Milwaukee, Wis., who will deliver it tonight in the Metro— politan Presbyterian Chureh, corner 4th and B streets southeast. It will be’ finely illustrated by views, and this will add to the attractive- ness of the description which will be given by the speaker. Mr. Chester is an eloquent speaker and is very popular. Miss ANNa Seatos Scuotrpt will deliver the second of the course in the Carroll Institute Hall, on 10th street above New York avenue, this evening. Her subject, “France and Na- poleou the First,” is one of great interest, and she treats it in an extremely interesting man- ner. Her lecture will be liberally illustrated by excellent stereopticon views. > ALEXANDRIA, THE NEAR FUTURE OF FISHTOWN, The new lessee of the fish wharf, Capt. Beach, has taken possession of his lease and the pre- liminaries of the fishing season will soon be in Progress. The wharves will be arranged so that the offal shall be cared for and the ancient and fishlike odor reduced to a minimum. Later & temporary electric light will be put up on the wharf and the work of the year commence with the first load of fish. It is thought, however, that most of the shad and a considerable pro- ortion of the herring will be carried to Wash- ington. AN OLD WARE HOUSE AND ITS STATUS. A petition now in the bands of the city finance committee in regard to the large three- tory brick ware house at the southeast corner of Prince and Union streets has an interest in wes the changes in the men and places of business here. Geo. Suckley & Co., wholesale dealers in one of the northern cities, had once a most extensive custom in Alexandria as to general hardware and_build- ing material, and were as well known here as any of the leading commercial houses of the great cities now are. Mr. Suckley was part | owner of this ware house and it is developed in the petition that his heirs cannot be found. Formerly the ware house was at the center of trade and would rent for perhaps $500 per annum: now it ix said in the petition that its as- sessment of $1,000 is more ‘than it can be sold for. Nore. ‘The Columbia Fire Company met last night and agreed to accept an invitation to take part in the firemen’s parade at Frederick city next June. A committee of the company will at once begin arrangements for that purpose. The Friendship Fire Cothpany (1774) has | definitely agreed not to appear in the inaugural procession. ‘The company bas an invitation to appear at Chicago in the Columbian exposition there and last night began its preparations to “go west.” ‘A Washington compat with Mr. G.C.Videtto as bought out for £30,000 the old Frost brick plant on the Potomac below this city and will go to work to renew operations there. ibe city school board will hold its regular meeting for March at the school tonight. > F.
