THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D. C. WEDNESDAY, MARCH IN THE HOLY LAND. SOME INTERESTING FACTS IN REGARD TO THIS EXTERPEISE AXD THE BUILDING OF THE ROAD SENT TO THE STATE DEPARTMENT BY CONSUL MERRILL. “AM aboard for Jerusalem.” ‘This ts the businew-likd cry that astonishes the traveler of the Holy Land now as he stands in the streets of ancient Jaffa and hears the warning clang of » locomotive bell. Then he sees the familiar sight of an American loco- motive, bearing the factory mark of Baldwin, Philadelphia. standing pufiing on the track ready to haula train over the sacred plains ‘where for 2,000 years only the Arab’s steed and | } ‘the stately dromedary have furnished trans- | The Jaffa and Jerusalem railroad has been | formally |. writes United States Consul Selab Merrill to the State Department OPENING A RAILROAD. The event was celebrated on the part of the Mobammedans by an address from an imam, one of their priests of high rank in Jerusalem, | pistform of the station as a kind of propitia- | | tory sacrifice: and on the part of the company it was celebrated by a dinner given in the even- ing under tents at the Jerusalem station. Djelal Pasha, sided-camp to tho sultan, was present from Constantinople to represent the sultan in the opening exercises. M. There are at least five deep euttings among the hills and three or four fine iron bridges. The steepest grade is 2 per cent, or about 100 feet to the mile. For thestation in | Jerasalem, which ia one mile from the city, a little mora than eight and a half acres of land were parchased at a verr high price—not less | than $25.000—land which thirty years aco was | sold for #1 per acre. This station is 2.476 feet ‘above the level of the station at Jaifa, and the exact length of the road is eighty-six and half Kilometers, or fifty-three and six-tenths miles. ‘The cost of the road is not far from $2,000,000. ‘The company was organized in 1890 and the concession was obtained in that year, three Years being aliowed for the construction of the Toad, but the builders compieted it in two and one-half years. French money built the road and the principal owners re-ide in Paris, where tlso is the headquarters of the company. LABOR EMPLOTED. Besides the pearants of the country, the | builders empioved in the construction of the road 300 Italians and » large number of AL | gerines and Egyptians. The men whodid most of the stonework—blasting through hills, iay- ing walls to support embankments and ecatting stone for stations and bridges—were from Leth- Jehem and the nearest neighboring village to it, called Beit Jala, men whose ancestors have been stonecutters from ancient times. The Arabs on the plain received 30 to 35 cents per day, the Hgzptinns aad ethers 49 10.50 conte per ‘dey, who could work in stone received from 70 cents to #1 per day. LOOKS TO BE WELL BUILT. ‘The road appears to be fairly well built, the ties being bedded for their entire length in a layer of small stones ten inches in depth Pains have been taken also at many points toshore up embankments of earth with masonry. No one can dispute the great convenience of this new means of communication with Jaffa, the seaport of Palestine, and in this respect the road will be highly appreciated by the natives, aswellasby the multitude of travelers and Pilgrims who visit this country every year.
