Johnson, secretary. se eae A Verdict for the Plaintiff. ‘This morning a sealed verdict for plaintiff for 05,000 damages was returned in the case of Eva A. ‘Casey agt. the National Union, given to the jury in the Circuit Court, division 1, Justice Bradley, on Tuesday. The suit was for the amount of policy on the life of her husband, who died at 1008 F strect from a dose of Rough on Rats, and the defendant claimed that it was taken with suicidal intent and vitiated the policy. while the plaintiff claimed that the drug was taken by mistake. The plaintiff was represented by Mesers. R. BR. Perry and E. B. Hay and the de- fendant by Col. Totten. a ‘The Emancipation Parade. In response to a call issued by Wm. H. Brown, secretary of the emancipation day parade, delegates of both factions met at Lewis Hail last night and harmony was restored. ‘Wm. H. Brown called the meeting to order. A | motion by R. M. Dorsey, requesting all the | offcers of both factions to resign, was adopted. George W. Stewart and Wm. H. Brown| tendered their resignations. which were ac- cepted. She brought up about 400 bushels from the lower Potomac. The first arrival of herring came in this morning per the tugboat June, Capt. Kersey, from Ragged Point. There were about 500 in the lot. This was an important event at the river front. The opening of the fisbing season is regarded as of more consequence than the beginning of the ovatertrade. The schooner Curlin, which left Washington yy, spent last night at Alexandria. ‘This morning Capt. Bennett of that craft reported to the Alexandria authorities that his cabin had been entered and robbed of two watches, one pair of rubber boots, one overcoat and various other articles. It is thought that the thief is in Washington. A largo party of Mount Vernon excursionists left this morning on the Macalester, The T. V. Arrowsmith left yester n for Baltimore to have repaired the injury she sustained in Nomini creek. She will be on the railway not more than half a day. ‘The Wakefield is due tomorrow froma long route down stream. The Young Men's Democratic Club held the regular weekly meeting last evening at the club rooms, No. 621 Pennsylvania avenue, President J. Fred Kelley in the chair, W. Grafton Bate- man, secretary. T.G. Riley, John A. Anadaleand Jos. J. Dieter were elected honorary members and a number of active members were also elected. The special committee on new Lanner for the cinb—Messrs. John Hadley Doyle, Jas L. Skidmore and Griftin B. Coleman—made their final report, at the conclusion of which the cov- ering was removed and the members were pre- sented with the view of the handsomest banner | that will deck the inaugural parade on March 4. The banner is 6 by 43; feet, the front bearing the emblematic game bird of the Young Men’ Club, painted by Charles Armor, on red silk of the finest grade of American manufacture, and bearing the inscription: “Young Men's Demo- cratic Club of the District of Columbia. Or- ganized 1884." AMU: Maniox Crawrorp’s Reaprxos.—The rei ings of Mr. F. Marion Crawford at Metzerott Music Hall last evening were greatly enjoyed. He hax a fine presence, a well-modulated voice, and the faculty of reading expression, feeling and dramatic effect. His selections were from “Sant Iario,” “The Witch of Prague with tbe Immortals,” three from “Children of the King.” and closed by telling the Calabria story of the origin and birth of Judas Iscariot. ‘Tue Havwakers.—Two enjoyable perform- ances of the ‘“Haymakers” were given at the North Capitol M. E. Church on Monday even- ing and last night for the benefit of the organ fund. The cantata was excellently sung and was listened to by large and appreciative audi- ences. The soloists performed their parts well and the concerted numbers were satisfactory. ‘The choruses were pariicularly well sung aud the whole reflected credit upon Mr. Edward Saxton, the director. Wittarp Hatt.—The testimonial concert to Miss Clara Rosafy will take place at Willard Hall tonight. This young singer bas many friends, and it is expected they will turn out in large numbers to do her honor. An excellent program has been arranged, in which Pro: Bischoff and other prominent local talent will participate. Coucmnvs.—Tomorrow night Mr. W. E. Curtiss will deliver an illustrated lecture in the chapel of the Church of the Covenant on “Columbus.” Mr. Curtisshas made a thorough study of this «ubject ever since the project of an international exposition was firat broached. He has traveled extensively, and has had more to do with the relics relating to the discoverer of America than any other man. He is abund- antly competent to make an extremely interest- ing talk and will undoubtedly do 0. ———_—_ Veteran Firemen at a Banquet. Baltimore veterans, yesterday afternoon, a short to the banquet. Shortly after 3 o'clock the hoste and guests, arm in arm and headed by the Dushane Post Band, proceeded to the Hotel Lawrence (E between’ 13th and 14th streets), where they sat down toa weli-spread table, to which full justice was done. During the afternoon Mr. Wm. Denham gave some appropriate vocal selections and remarks were made by a number of veterans. Mr. Holloway thanked the Washington association for “taking them in” and promising to wipe out all grievances if they will visit Baltimore on Easter Monday (April 3),gave them a hearty invitation, put it to vote and declared that invitation was accepted. The visitors’ apparatus was sent to the depot and shipped by the Washington association, and about § o'clock the monumental veterans were escorted to the depot and took their departure. Granger, a gripman on the eable road, appeared in Judge Miller's court yesterday morning and charged her husband with having threatened her life with a pistol The husband and wife are separated and the latter lives in the house of Mrs. Ida Jost, who is also separated from her husband. Her house is at No. S17 9th street. ‘The wife claimed that the husband came to the house with a pistol and threatened to kill her.
