The Big Syndicate Said to Have Other Purchases jew. COL, DANIEL LAMONT SAID TO BE HERE NR- GOTIATING FOR A ROAD—THE WAY THE COM- BINATION MANAGES ITS BOADS—ITS BALTI- MORE INTERESTS, Events follow each other with reasonable rapidity in the street railroad deal, and while there is mo sale of a road to record today, yet it can be said wi are st least two roads which are banging like ripe plums ready to fall into the first mouth that comes within range, providing | of course that there are substantial’ evidences | that the hunger is backed up by a good bank account. The next road that is to fall in line is said to be the Co- lumbia, There was ® rumor on today that the transfer of the Metropolitan verified. The rumor is said to have originated in the story that Col. Dan Lamont was in the city yesterday in conference with some of directors of the Metropolitan road. If he was here it is the first active appearance in the railroad deals in this city of any of the magnates who are said to be members of the great syndicate which has | already bought two of the roads in this cityand intends to buy a couple more before it stops. As the readers of Tae Sra are aware, the eyn- dicate has been represented in the purchase of the Belt and the Eckington roads by Mr. Mo- Lean and Mr. Johnson respectively. It was supposed that the same met lowed in acquiring the control of the other roads, but if Mr. Lamont is here in active ne- gotiation it is evident that the syndicate ix getting close down to the work, and that the time for a more direct connection with its interests in this city has arrived. . HOW THE SYNDICATE MANAGES, It may not be generally known, but the street railroad syndicate spoken of as the Widener- Elkins syndicate is one of the greatest [combinations ever formed and the imvest- | ments already in property of this character bave cached enormous proportions. In addition to the two men whose names are mentioned and who are known in Philadelphia as men of great wealth, the combination includes such men as ex-Secretary Whitney, Mr. Lamont and other well-known capitalists, Their holdings, it ix stated, now include a control of the car lines in Philadelphia, a number ofthe important roads in New York, Boston and Chicago, while in Baltimore they control the traction sys tem, which jis virtually all the roads of that city. The method of managing these great interests is of importance here, because it now looks as though in ao short time they will be managing the largest proportion of the street railroad mileage in this city. In Baltimore, for example, they placed at the head of the roads owned by them Mr. Edward Hambleton, a well-known banker and a man of wealth and standing in that community. The president of the proposed railroad between this city and Baltimore is Mr. Howard Munnikbuysen, also a well known citizen of Baltimore. These as well as a few others who are citizens of Baltimore, hold a block of stock and are therefore personally in- terested in fivaucial management of the property. ‘The members of the syndicate, in connection with the local capitalists, retain a control of the stock, and as they are’ careful in the selec- tion of the men who represent them locally it is said that they have no difficulty in managing wide extent of territo A CHARTER FROM CONGRESS. is well known they have secured a the building a railroad through this District, The surveys for this section of the road as tar as Hyattsville have already been completed by ‘their engineer, Mr. W. Keeley Schoept of this city. It is expected ‘that the road irom this city to Hyatteville wilbbe in op- eration some time in August. Within the Dis- trict the line of this road will foliow that of As 4th street cast, where it makes connection with the Eckington. For the present at least the city connection of the Baltimore and Wash- ington rond will be the Eckington. No work has been begun on the Baltimore end for the reason that negotiations are stil in progress to secure the control of the City and Suburban railroad of Baltimore. It is stated that it ie the intention at an early day to build an elec- tric road counecting this city with Baltimore. SOME LOCAL REPRESENTATIVES, It is possible that the interests of the syndicate in this city as soon as the series of sales now under way are completed will be intrusted to some resident here. Jt 1s, of course, not known who the man will be, but at ix intimated that possibly Mr. McLean and Mr. Johtiston may be induced to retain a substantial interest in the railroad franchises which have been and will be se- cured in this city. There is @ good | deal of curiosity to know who is conducting the deals for the other roads, and it was suggeste today that no doubt different men would appear as purchasers of the two other roads and after the entire deal is completed that they can dine together and compare ex- periences. WHO SOLD THE STOCK. Ten checks for the payment of the Eckington stock purchased were distributed today. It is not known precisely what stockholders parted following list is thought to be about correct: George Truesdell, E, Kurtz Johnson, B. H. Warner, RB. 7. Pettit, Jobn H, Lane, C. C.
