Floquet, president of the chamber of deputies, appeared for examination before the | Panama investigating committee in Paris yos- | terday. Hedeciared emphatically that he had | never received from the Panama company | Money for the recret vervico or for any other | object. It will be recalled that M. Rouvier, lately | minister of finance, stated in his speech in the chamber of deputies on Tuesday that when he assnmed office he found the seoret service fund depleted and had received personal loans from friends to enable him to carry on the business of the secret serviee burean. M. Floquet far- ther told the committee that when he was member of the ministry he had ordered that certain advertisements be printed in Paris newspapers. These advertisements, he ad- mitted, had been inserted, not from a busi- ness, but from a political point of view. ‘This admission is much commented upon as being tantamount to an acknowledgment that the advertisements were but a cover under which the newspapers were bribed to support the ministerial schemes. M. Bourgeois, minister of justice, appeared before the commission after M. Floquet had testified, to explain the seizure of the counter- feits of Thierree checks. On Monday, he said, M. Thierree admitted to the examining magis- trate that these were at his bank. The magis- trate then accompanied M. Thierree to his of- fice and secured them. Bourgeois promised that the papers of the dynamite societyand other important documents recently seized should be communicated to the commission. ‘Tuese documents, however, must be handled with great caution, lest their contents should be used for purposes prejudicial to the prosecu- tion or defense.
