The full committee, composgd of Senators Hoar, Me- Millan, Chandler, Teller and Mitchell, wns pres- ent. Aree and full discussion of the situa- tion was had, and it was decided to give the republicans of the states in question all the | Moral support possible, and to urge the re- ®| publicans to watch every move made by the democrats with a view to securing democratic Senators. At the conclusion of the consultation the committee gave out the following statement “The commitiee appointed by the caucus of | republican Senators to consider what should be done in view of the reported attempt on the part of certain democratic leaders to obtain a Majority in the Senate by improperly influenc- ing the election in the legislatures of certain states, have agreed upon a report, in Which they advise the republicans in all the states where such elect | are about to be held to spare no effort to carry | into effect the expressed will of the people in pount= | ment of « committee of republican Senators | Who shall take such action ax may be needful to | secure the admission to their seats of all Sena- | tors who may be so lawfully elected.” | “Ido not consider the chances of the demo- | crate in electing forty-four Senators to be one in « hundred,” said Mr. Chandler, talking about the situation. “The republicans now have @ | majority of eight and it will take four demo- | cratic Senators to overturn it, The only sure | additional votes they will have will be the Sen: | ators from New York and Wisconsin. If Mr. Kyle is not tobe counted with the democrate | they will have but forty-one members:if be is with them, forty-two. In some of these states the democrats are claiming the republicans have an absolute majority, and in others it ap the populists have the balance. It is the in- tention of the republicans to assert the right of the people of the respective states, no far as we are able, to elect their Senators according to the expressed will of the people. If the popu- lists control certain legisiavures they will elect the Senators, and how it becomes an attempted fraud upon democrats cannot see, Nowher is there visible a sufficient number of votes to give them, as democrats, control of the next U. 5. Senate.” eee CABINET RUMORS. A Story That Mr. Harter May Be Secretary of the Treasury Not Credited. A story is in circulation claiming to be based on excellent authority that Cleveland ix con- sidering the name of Representative Harter of Ohio" in connection with the secretary- |ship of the treasury. But for the fact that such good authority is given it would not be seriously regarded by the democrats in Congress, and even as it is few are wiiling to credit it. Harter has been a very earnest Cleveland man from the first and agrees with Cleveland on the financial question, but is probably the most aggressive anti-silver man in public life today. He ix #0 extremely radical that his colleagues in Con- | gress say that Mr. Cleveland could appoint no | other man who would put the Trepsury Depart- ment so thoroughly out of accord with three- fourths of the democrats in Congress, The presence of Don M. The rea- son given for opening the Chicago branch is that Dickinson is attorney for the Elkins, W | ner and Whitney syndicate which controls sur- face street railroads in New York, Philadelphia and Chicago and that he will devote himself j chiefly to their business. It is now generally believed in regard to the secretaryship of the treasury that, as said in Tue Stan the other day, Mr. Cleveland has offered that portfolio to Senator Carhsie, : -e- Jerry Simpson Going to Kansas. He | Says that the thing he wants is to secure con- trol of the legislature for his party and that he | does not desire to embarrass the situation in | the interest of his own ambition. The republi- cans, he says, now control the house by one’ majority, the result of republic luck in the toss of a penny to determine whether a populist or a republican should have the certificate. The attorney general has given the opinion, however, that this lottery is iliegal and if his opinion is sustained the popu- lists will be in control of the legisiature.
