WORK IN THE CHURCHES—STATEMESTS BY PASTORS OF THE YEAR'S ACHIRVEMENTS— MISSIONS AND OTHER CHURCK ACTIVITIES THE TREASURER's FiouRES, At yesterday's session of the Columbia Asso- ciation of Baptist Churches some interesting features were brought out in the report of the executive board after Tax Stan's report closed. ‘The resignation of Rev. L. M. Roper, late mis- siouary pastor of Mount Tabor Church, Ten- | leytown, was read. Rey. Roper resigned that | | he might prosecute his theological studies at | Rochester, Rer. G. W. M. Clapp, S. M. Yeatman and B. P. | Bingham wero appointed a committee and caused the erection of a brick addition 40x20 | feet at a cost of #825, on which there is an un- | | paid batance of $595.27. | The report of Rev. J. D. Smith, pastor of 1G Church, dwelt at length on the favor- | able influence of the free reading room, which, through the generosity of a friend of the pas- tor. nad been opened in the basement of the church. ‘The report of Rev. M.A. Connors, missionary disturbed by “Catholics and irreligious people.” | The report of Superintendent D. (. Fountain | of the East Washington Heights Baptist Mis- | sion contained the information that a friend had offered to donate $1,000 toward the er tion of a chapel for the East Washington Heights Baptist Mission. In conclusion the executive board's report stated that “the visible results of the work of the year have not been such as we could have wished. At Mt. Tabor the work has been interrupted by the deyarture of Brother Roper and the delay in filling the vacancy. At Anacostia the unfortun- ate division in the church retarded prog- re. At Grace Church the illness of the pastor has had its effect. At Maryland avenue the loss of several active members and various otber causes con- spied to reduce the atiendance at services. | Tue unfortunate location of the West End Mis- | sion doubtless interfered with prosperity at thhat point. Yet notwithstanding all these un- fortunate circumstances over twenty-five per sons were baptized during the year.” REPORTS OF PASTORS, J« The reports of the pastors on their work were as follows: Rew. The regula: NAMES GIVEN INDIANS. | Interesting Facts Told by Prof. Mooney i ‘Regarding Local Nomenclature. At the Cosmos Club last night, before the Anthropological Society, Prof. James Mooney read an interesting paper upon the biographic nomenclature of the Potomac river. In referring to aboriginal names and etymo- logies Prof. Mooney said that the most obvious fact in connection with this subject is the pau- city of material. The knowledge of the local nomenclature is derived almost entirely from Smith, with a few additions on the Mary- iand side from Father White and the Jesuits and an insignificant number from other sources. ‘The Indians of this region were a part of the Powhatan confederacy, which claimed all of tidewater Virginia and both shores of the Chesapeake nearly to the entrance of the Sus- quebanna. The ‘Powhatan language belonged | to the Algonquin stock and was cognate with the Delaware, the Massachuset and the Ojibwa. | It ceased to exist as a spoken language about fifty years ago, and as the early colonists and even the Jesuits of the ind coiony paid but little attention to aboriginal philology there remain of the tongue of Powhatan probably | Jess than 300 words in all, of which about one- half are untransk.table local names. Smith’s narrative gives about 140 local names within the ancient territory of the Powhatan tribes in Virginia and Maryland strictly and the Jesnits give us afew others, while a thorough overhauling of the old colonial land patents and other Fecords would undoubtedly supply | many more. , ! SOME WELL-KNOWN NAMES. ‘The word Potomac appears on Smith’s map as Patawomeck, the name of a principal settie- | ment which Jefferson in his notes on Virginia locates at the mouth of Potomac creek in Staf- | ford county, Va. As is the case with India: local names generally, especially in the enst, it | was the nam@got of a stream, but of a disir't | inclading « ttlement. The Jesuit Father | Jacker declares that the word relates to ““smati fishes.” He gives the general meaning as “‘the | river fall of swarms of smal) fry where fishes spawn in shoals.” Another authorive ease that the form of the word should be Fedbamok, meaning “they are comtug by water.” Stil another idea advanced is that the term meant “bushy or brushy river.” The rendering “river of «wane bas no authority. Acquia creek is enpposed to take its name from Eqniwi, meaning “tn or between some- thing. Occoquan is interpreted as meaning “hook.” Anacostia came from Nacotchtauck atd can- not be interpreted. ‘The uame Piscataway does not appear on Smith's map, yet it appears to be a word fuli of caning. ‘The Jesaits rendered it ax moaning ne who has his hair twisted up sileways and ward.” Avother authority gives it as wean- ‘it is getting dark,” while another thinks it means ‘‘the place of the white pine tree. Port Tobacco comes from Potopaca, meaning | tobacco leaves, FPamunky 1s understood to mean “where we tock a sweat.” The werd Chesapeake is carried through a| laborious process of derivation and interpreta- tion and finally explained to mean “a large basin of sait water. PERPETUATING INDIAN NAGIES. When Prof. Mooney concluded bis paper Prof. Ward madeashort talk on the propriety of giving Indian names to objects in the Zoclogi- cul und Rock Creek Parks which are to be | named, He thought this would be eminently | proper. Prof. MeGee read a brief paper, which bad | deen prepared by Prot. Holmes, describing the present time the policy of Careful, steadily carried out. | unceasingly in the future.
