As the participants in the presidential race enter the home-stretch the republican runner makes s spurt closing ap mach of the gap by which the democrat led in confidence and rea- sonable prospects, and the race is again in donht In the ptvotal state of Indiana recent repnb- Moan activity ie expecially notable. For some time the prospects there have favored the dem- cerats. Now the Iatter are losing their exces- atve confidence, the size of the plurality claimed by them is steadily diminishing, and the cam- paign ix assuming some of the phases of the campaign of 1888, The democratic confidence is based, as in- dicated in Tua Stan's admirable Indiana cor- respondence, upon the contention that the state is normally democratie—by 19,000 at the Inst election: that it can be carried for the re- publieans only by the use of money, and that the Anstralian ballot destroys this year that op- portunity; that the democratic party in the state ts harmonions and completely organized, while the republicans, who carried the state united party in 1888 by only 2,900, are this vear suffering from the Gresham defection, the lone of democratic soldier votes won by un- kept pension promises, and the apathy of dis- appointed office seekers. The republicans claim heavy gains in new voters and conversions in the ‘gas belt,” and some increase there is conceded them; losses by the democrats to the people's party in the southern part of the state, and losses all over the state on account of the unpopular tax law enacted by « democratic legislawre; repub- lican gains based on state pride and local senti- ment, Indiana having the head of the repub- lean presidential ticket, and [ndiana having been snubbed by the democratic refu.-1 1 allow tt even the tail of the democratic ticket. It is argued that future conventions will vie in the deference which they pay to Indiana candi- dates if Indiana responds at the polls according to the treatment which her candidates have re- ceived. To meet the argument based upon the | democratic plurality of 1490 it is pointed out | that the democratic candidate who carried the | state by 19,000 in that vear had 30.000 votes lese | then Harrison bad in 1888. and that to make the state republican it is only necessary for the | republicans who voted in 189% and who did not vote in 1890 to come to the polls in 1892, While the Indians fight gets botterand hotter and closer and closer the democrats are still sitghtly abead in confidence and show of pros- pects: but i is to be remembered that this was the ease in 1883 up to the election day which gave Gen. Harrison the state. —> ¢_—___ The Chicago Herald says it is an open secret that Castelar is to be the orator at the opening of the world’s fair.
