The members of the flourishing—college fraternity, the Kappa Sigma, are holding in this city the tenth biennial convention of that organization. The headquarters of this fra- ternity are at the Ebbitt, and there the meet- ings are being held and most of tho delegates are quartered. They are a fine, manly set of fellows and are evidently worthy successors of those who have been identified with this vener- able organization in the past. The Kappa Sigma was born in the University of Florence before Columbus discovered America, and it ‘was not until more than 400 years later that it was transplanted to this country. Several students in the University of Virginia were initinted into the mysteries, and returning to their alma mater established the organization there. This was in the year 1860, and in the subsequent spread of the order the new chap- ters established were mainly in southern col- leges. There are now thirty-two chapters con- nected with this fraternity, and the representa- tives at the present mecting number about fifty. There isa chapter in the Columbian University of this ci ‘The officers ‘ef the fraternity attending the convention are: Dr. H. J. Coffroth of Balti- more, W. G. M.: Herbert M. Martin of North Danville, Va., W. G.S.; William Steele Lemly of Jackson, 'Miss., W.'G. M.C. pro tempore Frederick Mf. Joncs of Wasittngton, W. @. P.; Pembroke Pettit of Palmyra, Va., W.' G. T. pro tempore. The convention began at 8 o'clock esterday afternoon with g businees session. There was au address of welcome by Mr. E. G. Seibert of Washington and remarks by Pembroke Pettit. At the evening sossion N. Evans Fergitt of Garrett Park, Md., wae initiated into the fra~ ternity. Tonight there will be a theater party at the Academy of Music, and the annual ban- quet Friday night will end the convention. ‘The delegates in the city a Jobn Henshaw, Martinsburg, W. Va; F. 0. Norris by the authority of Chairman Harrity, held its inaugural meeting last evening in the red parlor of the Ebbitt House. The meeting was called to order by Mr. Jamea L. Norris, ex-officio chairman of the committee, who made a very impressive address and sug- gested the election of Mr. Martin F. Morris as chairman of the committee. Mr. Mocris was unanimously elected and Mr. It. E. L. White was elected secretary and Mr. J. Harrison John- son treasurer. Addresses followed by Messrs. Morris, Charles C. Lancaster, president of the Maryland Democratic Club; W. F. Holtzman, Andrew A. Lipscomb, W. A. Gordon, Oliver T. Beaumont, Dorsey Clagett, R. 8. Davis, P. H. Hull, Dr. Charles Allen and others. ‘Much enthusiasm provailed and nearly $5,000 were subscribed for campaign purposes. The committee was also divided into subcommittees for the purpose of canvassing the District for additional subscriptions. It is said these suby| committees and the advisory committee will have full charge of all campaign work in the District of Columbia and will practically super- sede the central democratic committee. In connection with each of the subcommit- tees into which the general committee was led a number of associate members were sppointed in each legislative district to assist in carrying out the work in hand. ‘The committee will have headquarters at 1213 F street and another meeting will probably be held shortly. and F.
