STAR. NGTON. September 9, 1892. EVENING - WASHIN yRtpar THE EVENING STAR bes « regular and vermasent circulation tn Washingtes three Times larger than that of emy other paper tn theelty. Ae local NEWS paper and Ad. Vertining Wedinm it has ne competitor. | In about two months the presideatial election eecurs, and yet there are few signs that «uch a Momentous event isso near at hand. A num- Ber of considerations explain why igo ie so little apparent interest displayed. 1. The two Jeading parties nominated for the on well-known men, whose qualifications and | Whose views require no advertisement, and at | the same time menu whose occupation of the | Office had engendered enmities within their re- | spective parties. There were mon to be pla- cated by cach, and time was a nec ele- ment in the plncation. Even yet, within two monthe of the election, some of the democratic chiefy are silent, if not sulking. 2 Another enute is the attitude of the old parties with ret- erence to the silver question. 3 The third party and the uncertainty in the south and west Of its effect on the republican and democratic organizations. To these may now be added, perhaps, asa fourth cause the cholera and the | cholera scare. The anxious politician need not worry himself about apathy so long as it is not confined to any one party but characterizes to some extent both of the older parties. The Tepublican candidate has issued his letter of acceptance ard bis views have been read and commented upon. He bas al-o been ance: fully, «0 far as appears, mending po fences. ‘The letier of the democratic candi. date is probably not faz bebind in date. There is possibly some advantage in having the last word in the acceptance of the presidential nom- ination, but im the work of quieting internal inensions the advantage is conceded to be with the prompt reconciler, who takew the initiative. —— To the people of Washington it is@ matter of | importance that the foreign mils, particnlarly those received from infected or suspected porta, and yet more especially those from the cholera- | stricken steamships in New York harbor, should be subjected to the latest and most approved | metheds of disinfection. A good deal of un-| easiness would pervade the public mind if it} were known or suspected that mail matter from the vessels on which cholera bas occurred had passed throngh mails without adequate | treatment. If it should prove to be true that no fumigation or steam pressure had been ap- plied to packages sent throngh the tails from those infected ships and that such dangerous missives had been distributed in the national capital the indignation of the publi A be great. THe Stan showed yesterday from an examination inte the matter at the city post office that it was not clear to the officials there whether certain fourth-class matier marked “pet steamship Normannia” and distributed by means of the carriers’ deliveries was ever infected. There was no evidence of such dis-| infection, and s presumption, bared on general | | | | | } wor dis orders to disinfect, is not to be considered con- elusive. This is quite a rerions matter, and there should be no sort of donbt in regard to the fact of disinfection of all foreign mails. | Cholera is communicable as well by mail pac age, which is often merchandise most likely to | earry germs, as by contact in any other man- ner. a The republicans of North Carolina have nom- inated a state ticket, and there is a feeling both among republicans and democrats that the third party movement m losing ground through | bad management, The republican couvention seems to have foreseen greater advantage, at least to the repnblican electoral and legislative tickets, in straightout action than either in open | fusion or secret co-operation with the third party. Nevertheless, the posture of affairs may | bring the two elements of opposition to domi- | nant democracy into a sort of eympathy grow- ing out of their mutual dislike of the ruling party. + The landing of hundreds of immigrants from Russia and Germany at the port of Baltimore Yesterday, after ashort detention at quaran- tine, may not excite great alarm in view of the | announcement that all were “healthy” and no | suspicious antecedents were revealed. Indeed, they may have been all right frou # sanitary | point of view. Nevertheless, an exceedingly | close aud carefu! local inspection of all immi- grants, arriving either by steamer or train, is | highly desirable. There can be no excess of | vigilance in such cases: and ordinary watch- | p fulness. in contrast with what the emergency | emails, is wexiigence. —— t Whatever it was before, it is now Philan-| thropist Pierpont Morgan since he purchased the Stoningtou as a temporary home for the ntined eabin passengers in New York bar- | As inehvidaal is sometimes greater when | tomething is to be done than a nation of indi- Viduaix, or pansdo: stated the part is| Breater than the wh ——._+oo- Tt may happea.after «ll.that Candidate Cleve- | Jand will Lave a harder time with his present alleged friends than his late alleged encmnies; in | de, that it is notso much the Hill influ- tobe pineated as the Grace intlu- ence that is io Le chained up. soe scans are taking democratic gerry- manders into the courts all around, the latest | case being im Indiana. The democrats, on the | other hand, only take the republican gerry-| manders into the newspapers—a much less ef- | fective way of dealing with the evil. see ‘The recent maltreatment of women by white- | caps in Tennessee should meet with the sevengst | punishment if the guilty parties can be dis- i covered. The depravity of the women, great ae it may have been, was no justification for the brutality of these men. + oe At the venerable age of sixty-eight the Spring- field Hepudlican announces further improve ments in that well-regulated newspaper. In this case multiplicity of years does not imply senility, but the reverse. —— ‘Thos. B. Reed and Jas. G. Biaine both neg- lected to mention Harrison in their eampaign productions. Cleveland probably wishes that Editor Dana would do as much for him. a ‘The success that has attended the efforts to keep cholera out of the United States is re- markabie. The record should not be disturbed by any relaxation of vigilance. a ‘There are thirty towns in the United States called “Washington.” It inextremely gratify- tng for a city to be able to command so much admiring imitation. + ‘One of the sweetest reflections that current events afford is the thought that the musical infection “Tw-ra-ra-boom~de-ay"' is at present im quarantine. ——__+-+— It fw a pleasure to note that there was no kite- shaped track or pneumatic-tire embellishment fm connection with Corbett’s fictory. wee Mr. Piatt took his time abont manifesting his party loyalty, but he made a very neat job of ft.
