THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON. -* STAR. WASHINGTON. THE EVENING STAR has « reqular and permanent circulation In Washington three thmes larger than that of any ether paper ts theeity. Ae = lecal NEWS paper and Ad- vertising Medium it has ne competiter. ‘Some warm weather correspondent of the Denver Times fills space in that paper with malicious slanders of the capital qs the pro- | spective entertainer of the Grand Army. The | exhibition of ignorance and spite could not be | more complete, if Denver had been an unsuc- | cessful competitor at Detroit for the honor of entertaining the veterans and were stili sore over the disappointment. The nation is cred- ited with making onehslf of the G. A. RB appropriation. Every one who knows anything about the matter knows that the House of Representatives was so solicitous that the nation should not figure ‘even partly or indirectly as the expense-paying host of the Grand Army that the just principle governing the financial relations of capital and nation was violated in order to mark more dis- precedent that has been set, will cheerfully pay for the purposes of this entertainment far more than the far wealthier entertain Brrc_A_Baac. ‘Thousands of pieces of French, German and Japs- nese Bric-a-Brac just in. Countless new’Cups snd Saucers in the oddest shapes and quaint and artistic decorations. Sugar Bowl and Creamers, Individual Butter Plates, Olive and Bon Bon Dishes, Salad Bowls, Odd Plates, &o., &c., without end. Sixteenth Century Bread and Butter Plates at 20c., 25e. and 29c. —plates of the renowned ‘*Florence” ware, 8 closely resembling Doulton China that an expert could hardiy distinguish the difference. They are ‘28e. White and Gold. Olive or Bon Bon Dishes at 35 ‘and 38e., and Salad Buats to match, 85c. Beautiful Gold Embossed Salad Bowls at $1.25. After-dinner Coffee Cups, only a little larger than a thimble. in blue, pink, lavender and nile shaded effects, lined with gold—only 44¢. New Shape Afterdinner Cups (very tall, with heavy gold decorations. Scents. Genuine Limoges Cupsand Saucers, from 60c. up. Gold Decorated Boul- Hon Cups at 75 cents. Then there are Match Boxes ing cities of the past have done. ‘The part of the money which | {8 supplies from the taxes upon residents would | be equivalent to double the amount through | the national contribution under the law, if ex- | pended for any other municipal purpose. The | ninety thousand dollars thus appropriated | mean the sacrifice of one hundred and eighty | thousand dollars from the street paving, schools | and police fund. Then there is in addition the individual subscription of £50,000. From their comparative poverty the people of this city will entertain their soldier guests worthily and | im a manner to be remembered. This self- laudatory statement, financial and pro- phetic, is necessary as a preliminary step in the correction of misconceptions con- | cerning the capital prevailing in some parts of the west and based upon just such publications ‘as that now under consideration. All parts of the republic should-have a just and true idea of the nation’s city, and it is believed that the Grand Army gathering will do much to counter- act the falachoods that have fostered prejudice | against the capital in the west. That section | has often been indignant or amused at the | ignorance of the average eastern man concern- ing its resources, tendencies and character. ‘The capital of the nation, of which the west is now the prevailing section, has often found ftgelf in a precisely similar attitude of indigna- | tion and amusement 2t western misconceptions of its spirit and tendency. It is monstrous that | ‘any parts of any part of the republic should | apparently take satisfaction in slurring through reckless ignorance the republic’s capi- tal. There is no other American city more public-spirited in the hospitable entertainment of Americans in convention or conclave assem- bled, as it has proved on a hundred occasions. As the people from all parts of the republic Visit and admire their beautiful national city | and mingle with and come to know its residents | misconceptions are corrected, prejudices ef- | faced, and the sentiment properly held by every | American toward the capital is created. Out | of this very Grand Army entertainment Wash- | ington will make warm friends and admirers of | many of those who in reference to the enter- tainment have through ignorance most bitterly abused it. ——__+++ ___ ‘The public are suspicious of cholerine, for good reasons. Physicians are apt on several ac- counts to resort to euphemism, when it is possi- Die, in naming « disease, and other persons hav- ing an interest. as they suppose, im glossing | over such matters assist in concealing the facts | as long as possible. The effect is disastrous. | ‘The people are sometimes lulled into security and take no precautions. An outbreak of the Pestilence, which might have been avoided, ensues with fearful results to life and of course to business. Thus, for the sake of a continu- ance for a short while of uninterrupted trade and communication, a city—and those with whom it has affinitios—may be placed at the | merey of cholera, yellow fever or some other contagious or infectious disease. The policy of facing facts squarely and preparing for the Worst is both the most honorable and the most | beneficial for any community and for humanity | at large. see While the cho‘era rages more violently both im Persia and Ruseta than late reports indicated, | the chief points of danger for the people of | this repubhe are in western Europe. The | Official announcercent that the disease has | reached Hamburg Havre is accompanied by the necessary official warning and preparation, Both Havre and Hamburg are connected with | New York and Ba by regular steamship Hines. and it b the duty of all persons Fesponsible to exercise extreme care. The instructions sent out from the Treasury Depart- Ment are comprehensive, and it is hoped that | the preenutious are timely. The danger is per- | haps greatest from the tramp steamers, because | quarantine regulations can be applied to regular steamers better than to those which come irreg- larly and unexpectedly. - =" The suggestion of President Ingalls of the | Chesapeake and Obio ratlway that the employes Of that road be admitted toa share in the pro- | fits shows an admirable disposition to keep pace | | All 35c. and 40c.
