THE EVENING STAR has a regular and permanent circulation im Washington three times larger than that of any other paper in thecity. As a lecal NEWS paper and Ad- vertising Medium it has ne competitor. Happily the fame of Christopher Columbus does not depend on the fact that the new world @iscovered by him was not named in his honor. ‘The proposition made by the New York com- missioner to the world’s fair to have the exhibi- ‘tion opened on the date of Americus Vespucius’ alleged discovery of the continent, new style, May 5, cannot, of course, affect the grent ad- aatral’s claim on the admiration of the world. ‘Whether America be called in honor of the Florentine geographer and pilot, who was cer- tainly with the first voyagers after Columbus ‘who sighted the South American coast, then an- mamed, but was not in command; or, as asserted Dy Marcean and others, ft was called after the ‘edoriginal name for table land, Amerique, does zot matter. Columbus led the vanguard of dis- covery. He made it possible that Ojeda and fhe Cabots should win some glory in the dis- covery. Posterity has been kind to Americus, ‘or Amerigo, as his name was in Italian. It hae ssumed that the name of the continent was ‘Pestowed in his honor, and on the fact that late fm the 16th century the maps began to bear that name is built up a false claim in some quarters that he and not Columbus was the real discoverer. The inva- Ridity of this claim has been shown by Spanish and Portuguese investigators. Among others Fiddled the pretensions put forth by the friends of Vespucius, and demonstrated that if the ex- of which he wase member is to be eredited with the discovery of the north coast of South America the captain, Ojeda, and not the pilot, Veepucius, is the man who should re- eeive the honor. Accident gave Amerigo ‘Vespucci, to ure his right name, a grand posi- tion, and posterity, busy with other things, has permitted him to enjoy it. But the facts, not- ‘withstanding the claim has been revamped, are ‘acainat bim, and there is noreason in the world the United States world’s celebration of | Coiumbus’ discovery in the hour of its inaugu- Fatiou should give the credit forany share in the @iscovery to one whose title to it is fraudulent. It was on the Zist of October, new style, 1492, ‘and not on the 5th of May, 1497, new style, or eny other date,on which the new world was found, and it was discovered by the tireless Italian, Christopher Columbus, in the service of the King and Queen of Spain, and not by any | other Italian or any other man in the service of any other country whatever. Of course this takes no notice of any possible visit to these shores in earlier centuries by Irish or Scan- dinavians, which pre-discovery, as it was un- known in Europe all the intervening period, does not bear against the great discovery of the fifteenth century. —— oe The New York Sun's careful estimate points toa wheat yield in Minnesota and the Dakotas ‘of 100,000,000 to 120,000,000 bushels if the frosts hold off until the later sown crop matures. It 4s seen that the winter wheat areas are not likely to give more than an average yield, and the spring wheat areas will probably give below the average. Assuming an average acreage equal | to that of 1891 the crop may be estimated at | 450,000,000 bushels, or some 132,000,000 less than | the reported product of 1891. As domestic | consumption has increased by fully 8,000,000 | Dushels the exportable surplas from the crop of 1892 will be about 140,000,600 bushels less than | St was the last year. The review also includes an estimate of 60,000,000 below last year for Indin, crops in South America and Australasia rather below than above 1891, while the present crops in Asin Minor, Northern Africa, Greece and Bul- aria are decidedly inferior to Inst season ‘The area in Great Britain is assumed to point to reduction in product of 8,000,000 to 10,000,- 000: the harvests in Italy, Spain, Portugel and Hungary are from 10 to 15 per cent below the last, while great fears are entertained of the Fipening of cereals in Scandinavia, due to low ture and excessive rains, and doubt exists as to the true condition of the Russian grain crops. Thus, as this state of affairs shows | @ steady falling off in the supply in nearly | every direction, there would seem to be ground for the opinion that no offset exists sufficient to make good the deficit in countries indicated. ‘The Sun reasons that if the excess in the | French and Belgian wheat crops equals India's Joss, and Russia's excess equals the decrease in | Great Britain and Italy, there is no increase | anywhere else sufficient to replace the differ- ence in the yield of the American fields between Jast and this year.
