Speaking of this innovation recently, an | officer who has been away from the academy many years said: “Music, well Tl be | the only music lever had wasa cracked b or a plebes concert; the naval academy is going | to the deal,” but it still thrives and still turns out the regulation number of young officers. | A boat club would naturally seem to be the first athletic cluh thought of in a school of this | kind, but this is the first year fora long time that one has been organized, and the announce- | ment that it is to row the “Severn Boat Club” of Annapolis soon may carry visious of future laurels with the oars for the cadets. And there was a time in the seventies when the academy | had boat clubs, and crews that could win, as | the trophy flags in the mess hall that so few cadets have ever even inquired about attest. © SURPRISING CARELESSNESS. This utter carelessness on the part of cadets tolearn what the many trophies in the acad- emy commemorate is surprising to an outsider. I was recenily surprised to find that among large crowd of cadets not one knew the ori of the two little brass guna at the main e trance to the new quarters. They were the sa- luting battery of the old yacht America and | were carried by her when she first won the yacht championship from the Ei h off the | coast in 1878, and were afterward pre- sented "to the Naval Academy by Gen. BF. Butler. Then some have to be told that the | old bronze bell, with its queer decoration: ‘that hangs below the band stand, was a trophy ot the famous visit of Commodore Perry to Japan that opened the ports of Japan to our maccehant navy and tartad her on 4 career of advancement and success. The bell was not from one of the sacred bells of Japan, but one that had been captured in -var by them from an island off the coast of Korea, and ite inseri tion, when translated literally, shows that its makers had an idea of poeti? language and thought. “Tam made to wake the birds in the holy forest. that they may sing praises to the five Fede and T sing, toot east that was what iscount Kage Kazu Nire, who was a cadet in ‘the clas of “91 from the empire of Japan, said the strange figures on the bell meant, and every | ‘one who has met the genial viscount that tried | ‘the life of an American midshipman for four years at Annapolis cannot doubt their truth. There is one more relic that few oi the cadet! know of. For years an old rusty, ill-shapen anchor, pounded and battered, has ‘lain in the jum, : of bat tle ship Philadelphia went over in 1803 to take part in the war with Tripola she lost her anchors, and it became necessary to make one. | Under the hot tropical sun. on the sands of the | African coast, the blacksmiths of the old Phila- | delphia hammered out this anchor, and if'it was a ilttle “long shanked” and “cock billed,” it etill held old rhip in many a foreign port till it was replaced bya better one and sent ashore to end its days just like any other one of BOATSWAIN SHARP'S DEAT. Last week at Norfolk navy yard, on the old receiving ship Fra: an old tar that many Naval Academy people will remember died at the age of eighty-two years. This was Boat- swatn's Mate Hendrick Sharp, one of the noted characters of theservice. He was born in Mal- aga. Spain, in 1910, and enlisted in 1826 on the Fulton, the first steam man-of-war ever built for any navy. From that time till his death last week Sharp served continuously and with honor in the navy. He wns one of the crew of the brig Somers in 1843, when Midshipman was hung at the vard arm for mutiny and be was always fond of telliz story of the ill-fated midshipman, who gave his life fora crime he was never really ity of. At the famous naval battle of | jobile bay in 1964 he was a gun captain on the Kichmond. and in a dozen other naval | ments of the late war he won distinction, being twice wounded in battle. After the war be served in every ocean on the globe, and for several years was in the sea. | mauship department at Annapolis, where old | Norman, a seaman of neariy as wide ar experi- | ence as Sharp, now holds forth caring for the modelx and keeping their neat miniature rig- ging ‘taut and snug. Such men arealwars popular with officers and | from receive every favor that can be given them. EXTENSION OF THE QpoUNps. Of the changes during the last year the most Roticeable is the extension of the grounds to the westward a# far as College creek, taking in about | {, ten eres, and the addition of several mn officers’ quarters in the new grounds, thus giv ing all the officers at the academy quarters, in- | stead of compelling many of them to live out in } the city, as in former years. This isa great ad- Yantage, for while the oficers of high rank al had quarters, formerly the younger married officers who could least afford it were compelled to rent quarters in the city. ox THE caUISE. The first, third and fourth classes, who are on their practice cruise for the sumimer on the Constellation, are enjoying the summer im- mensely at New London.
