THE’ EVENING i. ESDAY, n STAR: WASHINGTON, D. c. WEDN JULY 27, 1892. PRESENTED WITH A GAME. Breitenstein’s Wildnesa Gives a Victory to the Senators. ‘The league clubs rank as follows: 30.0 7 ipciunati o 4 Shicawo + ittgh 3 vile 5 St. Lue. Tt was nip and tuck yesterday, and although the mercury stood at the century mark, vet the way the Brownies hammered the horse bide gave even those sweltering onthe bleachers the chills. For the greater part of the game Mr. ‘Von der Ahe’s young man Breitenstein was con- siderable of » puzzle, while the visitors took very kindly to Rillen’s delivery. At one time they had three times as many hits as the home team, yet the locals were in the lead. For some | Feason Mr. Irwin does not believe in taking out 8 pitcher when he is being pounded, so Killen | bad to stay on the bag and take his medicine. Fortunately, the almost perfect felding of the home team kept the vistors’ bite from being too effective, Dut as Breitenstein was not being Bit herd it would seem se though another | \tcher should have been substituted for Killen, coeus excuses everything, so doubtless yesterday's victory will be regarded by the | Manager's friends a« another “vindication. | } ' Breitenstein gave the game away. ‘The visit- ors bit hard enongb to win. In fact, they earned six of their eight rons, Washington earning only three of their ten. and yet only one error was made on each side. The error of Robinson was inexcusable. He tried to throw @ ronner out at first when there was a base ran- ner of the Line coming toward him from second. He threw high and both were safe. Richard- son basa way of coming to the rescue with a hit when it is needed. Cousequentiy it was no when he rapped out a double vesterday with three men on’ bases and -cloared the dia | mond. Difficult stops made by Cooney and Richardson were heartily cheered by the 900 t. It was a see-saw game, and by timely ting the visitors ahead. ‘Then the home team «parted. in the visitors tied the score. Then in the tenth, on two doubles, « sacrifice and a single, two more runs were scored, and this Yon der Aho's hired men , could not overcome. Today the oe The Cincinnati# were pigmies in the hands of the Phillies yesterday. Rhines was batted all over the deld and in the fifth inning was suc- ceeded by Holliday. who was hit as hard as his redecessor. Humilton retired from the game in the sixth inning because of hiv lame foot troubling him and wns replaced by Weyhing. ‘The home team hit for a total of forty-six bases. _ Attendance, 2,796. Score, 26 to 6. “Papa's Colts” won « lucky game yesterday at Baltimore. Two of their five hits brought in the winning run in the eighth inning. The team outbatted the visitors. Its only er- ror was fhexpensive, and Vickery was invulner- able after the first inning. A base on balls and a wild pitch m that inning allowed the Colts to score two runs. In the eighth Dablen made a hit, stole second and third and scored the win- ning run on Anson's hit. Van Haltren pounded Laby for seven bases in four times at the bat. Attendance, 792. Score, 3 to 2 | Boston put up « stiff all round game and | won easily, as Stratton was an easy mark for them. visitors, outside of Jennings, could do little with Nichols’ fast shoots. Tom Brown's two assists from center field were the features. The triumvirs hired Fred Lake ss assistant catcher. He has just returned from Kansas City. Score, 10 to 4. The New Yorks got the hang of Cuppy's de- livery in the fourth inning sesterday sud. oc- cured a lead which the Clevelands could not overcome. The score, 6 to 4. The Brooklyn team had no difficulty in de- | feating Pittsburg, fielding brilliantly and mak- ing ly hits. Terry attempted to pitch against his old companions, but after the wec- ond inning he gave the piace to Gumbert. | Score, 12 to 5. The Baltimore club accepted the terms of Pitcher George B. Stevens yesterday. He was wired to report for duty at ‘once. Stevens was | member of the Columbus team, from which Louisville secured Pitcher Clausen. Stevens Tas considered one of the best pitchers in the j jestern League and Chicago and several of tesms were anxious to secure him. The signing of Stevens means the release of Pitcher Ferson. Manager Hanlon will give the latter bis ten | days’ notice today. The St. Louis club is negotiating for Second Baseman Manning of the Kansas City club. If he ia secured Crooks will supplant Pinckney at third. Secretary Munson of the St. Louis club went to New York and signed George Gore | to play center field for the Browns. Brodie | will play left, Gore center and Carroll right. | Caguthers will go into the box as one of the regular pitchers. Anson has decided to teke « team to Cuba next winter. Crime and the New York tes Resume Their Old Relations. Agent Gardner of the Society for the Preven- tion of Crime of New York city has, according to his own story, been baving a hard time of it since his chief, the Rev. Dr. Parkhurst, sailed for Europe. He asserts that he cannot get the district at- torney’s office to bring his cases on for trial, $| and that certain police justices in the city bstruct his work in a subtle but none the less 3] | effective way. | Ina word, Agent Gardner declares that the enormous power of Tammany Hall is bet | exerted every day through the New York polite | department to set tho efforts of the society at | naught end to render what good it has slready accomplished of absolutely no effect. He referred to a sirigle case of this kind to show how diligently the district attorney's of- fice pursues the houses. The ited form of the house at No. 172 sont outin the usual cor some time ago. ‘This form called the owner's attention to the fact that his house was ran for improper .pur- poses and orded him to have the premises va- cated without delay. It was signed De Lance: Nicoll, district attorney. The house is stil running. The police have made no effort to the owner Went sat street was close it, and the reason why Capt. I found them sitting around fanning themselves when they were not running out to consult a racing ticker.
