Being out- \ batted and outfielded is something a club can- not hebp occasionally, but there is no excuse for ‘aclub throwing away chances by refusing to sacrifice when sacrificing should be done. A little sharp discipline is evidently necessary. , Mr. Irwin should chow that he is manager and not ny howling oeenpant of the “quarter- | stretch’ whose sole ery ix “Hitter out!” | Beyond this fault no criticism can be made of | yesterday's work of the local team. Holliday wae right in saing that he should bave been declared safe, but he knows very well that an umpire caunot reverse a base decision on the testimony of « player and that player the one directly interested. Then what was the sense of his kicking? He should have been fined heavily and then set on the bench hard enough to make his teeth rattle. There senseless quos- tionings of decisions on points of ji it (not on interpretations of rules) do more to hurt base ball attendance than everything else, | and Mr. Young is to be commended for trying | to stop them. Mr. J. H. Ralston, the president of the board of town commissioners, said that the announce- ment that prominent Henry Geurge orators | | night was erroneous; that some might be present, but they would not be asked to speak, a8 be pre- ferred that the discussion of the subject should be confined to the citizens of the town only. He also remarked that he wished to hear the ques- tion argued pro and con, and would not attempt to ent a single tax opponent from partici- in the debate, no matter how much he censured the action of the commissioners. ‘THE SINGLE TAX MEN. Said n single tax man to Tux Stax reporter Yesterday: “I see there iv an evident intentton on the part of some of our opponents to dis- courage the people from attending the meeting called by the commissioners for | ing by creating the impression that it is only called for the pur of discussing the merith of the single tax Now, setting aside all guestion whether it is right to adopt or reject any theory or principle without discussion, I think all fair-minded men will agree that an accusation ought to be followed by « hearing. “This ix x case in which the commissioners of have so interpreted the law as to an order Toparding taxation which is highly objection- able to some of the citizens, perfectly accept- able to others and very imperfectly or not atall understood by the remainder—perhaps « greater number than both the others together. ‘A meeting was called by the objectors and was very largely attended by those who did not ob- fect and by those who did not understand, but ‘were anxions to bear, not a general discussion, perhaps, but at least a full and explicit stato- ment why the commissioners had done this thing—a statement which the president of the board of commissioners, who. was present, was fully prepared to make.’ But this was not per- mitted, as it was not the intention of those wh: had called the meeting to listen or permit oth present tolisten to any statements whatever om the commissioners in their own behalf, Because, as was said, the printed circular pre- viously issued by the commissioners was enough. Yet one of the committee of five appointed by that mecting to present to the commissioners the censorious resolutions culling upon them to rescind or resign went away wondering why the commissioners had not made a statement. Comment is unnecessary “Now, the object of this Thursday evenin; meeting is to correct. the glaring injustice of the former one by affording those who do not slready fully understand the question at issue ‘and there are many) an opportunity of hear- ig what the commissioners have to say for themselvés on thisimportans matter—why the: iseued the order referred to, what is the law ac- cording to or under which they issued said order and what were their precedents, Those points must be understood before the people can pass intelligent judgment on the action of their commissioners. Surely there can be noth- ing communistic in this proposition. Inci- dentally there may be some discussion, and why not? But it is my understanding that the merits or demerits of the single tax, as such, are not the topics for that meeting.” A single tax | e has been organized in this town, called the Hyattsville Single Tax League, which consists of a dozen or more members. Mr. M. H. Kearney has been elected temporary president and Mr. L. M. Schimp secretary, and steps will be shortly taken to form » permanent organization. AN EPISCOPAL FAIR. ‘The vacant cottage of Mrs. Elliott in Melrose Park was the scene of festivity last Tuesday evening, the occasion being the Episcopal fair given by the ladies of the guild for the benefit of the Pinkney Memorial Church. The supper room was handsomely decorated with flags and bunting and numerous Japanese lanterns in front of the house shed a mellow and fantustic ight over the lawn. Beautiful maidens, attired in snowy caps and aprons, acted as waiters and Indies of equal loveliness presided over the various tables. The merry-go-round was liber- Le compe by grown Pom on as well as children and the fair was a financial as well as a social success.
