4 7 WASHINGTON. WEDNESDAY... ....- CROSBY 5. NOTES: perma times larger than thi the etty == a Friends of the Washington High School have little reason to compiain of the result of the in- vestigation made by Senator Gallinger’s com- mittee as to the complaint that the public schools of the District are unable to prepare students to pass the adiniaion examinations for Flarvard. If Congress is pledged throagh Sen- ator Gallinger to apport any effort to make the High School and all ths public schools of the District a credit to the capital of the nation, the investigation may be accounted as @ source of profit to the District. There never was any strong opposition to the investigation proposed Dy Senator Gallinger, as it was believed and ax- serted in Tice Stax, and the event bas proved it to be trae, that « congressional inquiry would Gisciose nothing to the discredit of the school. There was naturally some feeling against a notion that the Wi&bington schools should be hauled up before the bar of Congress because officers of Harvard University had diseovered that some study required for admission to Har- vard was omitted from the High School course. It wns generally thought that the first attention should be given to the large majority of pupils whose education ends with the High School, and that courses should be arranged primarily to meet their needs. Then if the meansat hand justified, such studies could bo added as are usually required for preparation for college. However, the District will have no occasion for any feeling other than gratitude to the Harvard officials if the investigation they set on foot re- sults, as it apparently has done, in creating a new interest among lawmakers in the schools of ‘Washington and convincing them that it is thefr duty to give the most liberal support to every effort locking to the betterment of the system. soe Some of the delay on the part of the firemen in their efforts to aave life and property at the fire in a photograph gallery yesterday morning is attributed to the presence of overhead wires on D street in the rear of the burning building, ated the raising of ladders, A net- work of wires offers a physical obstruction to ladders, which im itvelf is » ent to condemn the overhead system, but ad to this is the demoralizing influence of firemen. too, of the presence of such wires, the touch of which may mean a frightful death. One of the most subsantial objections urged against the trolley system the interforen« erations of the fire department. ‘This is an objection based not on ai ‘THE EVENING STAR. the city streets is | Uscan. rs Muasixe.
