ADJOURNMENT UNTIL TOMORROW. Cleveland’s Success Gen- erally Conceded. Followers of Boies and Hill Stead- fast. TODAY'S SHORT SESSION. FAVORITE SONS STEPPED DOWN. How Gorman, Gray and Morrison Were Eliminated From the Contest. Special Dispatch to The Evening Star. ‘Cuicago, June 21.—The democratic nomina- | tion is made before the convention is called | |to order. ‘There remains now merely a for- mality. The fight against Mr. Cleveland ended | early last evening. After Mr. Gorman had de- layed his response to the call of the anti-Cleve- land men for him to enter the field against the ex-President there was but one move left be- forea surrender. That was the attempt to nominate Mr. Morrison. At an earlier stage in | the fight an attempt bad been made to bring | Mr. Morrison into the field as @ candidate, for no other Cleveland vote to nominate Mr. move was in earnest, having for its object the actual nomination of Morrison. The Illinois men knew that there was no longer any danger of a trick, and therefore some of Mr. Morrison's warmest friends in the [linois delegation en- couraged the movement and entertained a hope that a majority of the delegation might be in- duced to abandon Mr. Cleveland and to present the name of Morrjson to the convention, sup- and make it "Y | ported under the operation of the unit rule by the solid delegation. ‘The anti-Cleveland men from the south are ready to fulfill their part of the agreement if | Mr. Morrison's name should be thus pre- sented, and it was understood by the linois members that every anti-Cleveland vote would be cast for Morrison if the Dlinois delegation would support him. This plan, if carried out, they believed, gave fair promise of Mr. Morrison's nomination, and the anti- Cleveland men were confident that it would re- sult certainly in the defeat of Mr. Cleveland and they were ready to soetapa isin the compact. Tt was not long, however, before it became apparent that a majority of the Llinois delege- tion could not be held ‘and that Mr. Morrisun himself had no confidence in the plan, as far as it concerned his own welfare. It was urged by some of the delegation whose, loyalty to Mor- rison could not be questioned, that while such a compact would in all probability result in the defeat of Mr. Cleveland the man who was made the instrument by which this defeat was accom- plished could not hope to secure that support which must come from Cleveland men to bring about his nomination. ‘They said that it would make Mr. Morrison | about the nomination of Mr. Gorman or some other man,and that while they desired the nom- ination of Mr. Morrison they preferred Mr. Cleveland to any one but him and did not de- sire the defeat of Cleveland merely to open the field to some one else. | , This argument was potent and it became evi- Illinois delegation that they would do what they afterward determined, stand solidly by Mr. Cleveland. This ended the matter. GORMAN'S CASE SIMILAR. This same line of argument was what hed caused Mr. Gorman to hesitate so long about permitting the use of his name ase candidate and what afterward led him to reject all the overtures that were made to him and to brush aside his most pressing ambition. The anti- Cleveland men offered Mr. Gorman of the convention. They convinced him that enough delegates would rally around him to make certain the defeat of Mr. Cleveland, but they could not give him promise of enough votes to nominate. him and he saw himself placed ina position to topple over the idol for some other to carry off the crown. says: “The announcement of the severance of this officer's connection with the met cal service, of which he has been an eff official for eighteen years, is a fitting occasion formance of efery duty as- comment is by purpose than to divide the possible Gorman.
