— A LADY ADVISES LADIES, A Few op TF I know @ charming lady who knows more Deautifal sud attractive women than any other peg te He city. In conversation recently she : “IT often feel very when I see 90 many beantifal women so and suffer. so much, and I have often asked myself what the reason is. I think ladies do not exer- cise the care. They do not eat nourish- ing. are careless of their feet, their ‘necks, their In this way they open the door ‘for diseases and those thousands of troubles which so often afilict womankind, but warse than ali, they allow their life and strength storun down tos low ebb. How many women we see constantly in this condition. They need help, they something to upon, that will assist them, some Wiend in need. Ido not know what , Sick eakuess are and I am satis- Sted ladies generally could be in the same happy condition by a proper use of the same means, ‘This Indy’s remarks are entitled to the great- est consideration, for they are an indic: what hundreds of ladies have found to bea necessity. It should be borne in mind, however, that it i only pure whisky which should ever {be used, and that Dudy « Pure Malt is the only ‘one which receives the indorserent of seicntists and the recommendations of physicians. Rosissox, Panxex & Co Axerrcax Crormens, tion of¢ Opening the Republican National Conven- tion at Minneapolis. The following is the speech of Mr. J. Slost Fassett yesterday, temporary chairman of the republican convention at Minneapolis: “Mr. Chairman and Fellow Republicans: For the distingaished honor which you have conferred upon me Tam very grateful. I as | sume the duties of presiding officer with ex- | treme diffidence, and am sustsined by are |}iance upon your generosity, forbearance and co-operation. It is eminently fitting that a re- | publican convention should be held ina temple | erected for the display of products of proteo- tion to American industries and in this beauti- ful city of Minneapolis, the joy and pride of the giant west. This city, which just about equals in age the republican party, with its | prosperous mills and factories ad workshops and its generous and happy homes, abounds in object lessona teaching clearer than in any | words the sound wisdom of republican doc- trine. “We are met to exercise one of the highest privileges of our citizenship. As trustees of seven millions of voting republicans gathering from every state and territory in the Union it becomes our duty to formulate for the inspec- tion of the people the belief and purposes of our party relative to all the living political ques- tions of national importance and to choose that | man for leader under whose guidance we feel | we shall be most sure of establishing this belief | | North Carolina, J. O. Wileox; Pennsylvania, D. iB. in the form of laws. Weare here not as war- ring factions struggling to win supremacy un- | der favorite leaders, bat as co-members of one great party seeking to elect from the roll of ourhonored great men the type of statesman | | who ehsll he regarded as the most complete em- | bodiment of the cardinal docirines of our party. “There is no? a republican in this enventioa whove heart does not burn with andor for triumph in the impending campaign. We are all ra for mccess. We are bere to make the ‘necessary preliminary arrangements and we all propose to make them in the right way and in the right spirit. If there is ever a time for re- publicans to differ it is essential in such con- ventions as this, when they are met together for the express purpoee of reaching ultimate unity through contest of present differ- ences. In the wide-reaching and delicate business | of agreeing upon the standard bearers for a | great party there is abundant nity for | the honest men to hear and express honest dif- ferences of opinion, and the more earnest the ore hearty the opizions the more be the contests and collisions: | omplete the final unanimity. The | air ie always sweeter. it is cur right now to | oppose each other: it will be our duty to unite | tomorrow. Our differences should end at the | convention doors, and will end there. Wheu | this convention shall have concluded its lebors we shall have but one choice, and that the nom- inees of this convention; but one purpose, their election. | “The nomination does not end the eampaign: | it begins it. The campaign which is to be made will not be the campaign of the candidates, by The condidates and for the candidetes, but of all the party, by all the party and for all the ty in the interests of the whole people. Win malice then toward none, but with a mand respect toward ‘ll, cach of us, | according to his light, ax God gives him to see | the light. should subordinate all merely local | and personal consideration to an earnest en- | deavor to secure the best inierests of the re- | publican party throughout the entire sistezhood of states. j | “None of our trusted leaders are weak men; all of them are strong. Some may be stronger than others. If, as each delegate views the field, there is come man whose figure seems to him larger, whose stature larger, whose fame more commanding, whoee name more inspiring than that of any other man. then the pathway | of each delegate should be broad and easy. | “The eves of all the republicans at home and the eyes of all our adversarics everywhere are intently fixed upon this convention. A nation is watching ps; our enemies criticise, our friends | | ratify. responsibility is enormous, but | you will meet it wisely. “The republican party has never yet made a mistake in its choice of candidctes: it will not make a mistake here. All over this broad land the bonfires are set to be lighted, the flags are | ready to be unfurled and the republicans at | | home are waiting to shout in approval of your | nominee. | “The history of our party since 1856 is the | history of our country. There is not a single | | page but shines brighter for some act or come | word of come great republican. Count over our chosen whom we are teaching our children to love, emulate and reverence and you shall name republicans. Lincoln, Seward, Grant, Sherman, Garfield, Logan, Hotrison and Blaine These are a fewof our jewels and we may | proudly turn to our democratic friends with eR great and remai Delie | and advocacy of the ennobling and inspiring doctrines of the republican faith. “I have not the time even tocatalogue the long list of great works undertaken and performed. You are all familiar with the story of the irre- pressible conflict undertaken and concluded; slavery abolished: a public credit established; | the Constitution and the Union restored and re- constracted; the old flag washed clean of every stain and new stars added to its glory; the wide weet thrown open to casy access and settle ment; the policy of protection to American labor and American industries established, de- veloped and vindicated; the markets of’ the world opened by the persuasive logic of rec procity to the products of the American work- | shopand the American farm, until today the | nations of the earth are paying tribute to the ity of our legislation ard diplomacy in miliions upon millions of inerensed purchases, | and Lord Salisbury has been driven to the sig | nificant confescion that even in England free | trade has proved disappointing. “The democrats have about exhausted in the | Fifty-first Congress one year of congressional | | life in vain attacks upon three items in a tariff Dill made up of the 300 items. At this rate of | | proceeding they will have to be trusted for 800 | | years in power before we could eee a tariff reform &sagreed upon by our conflicting democratic | friends. | | i ‘THE FORCE BILL MUST PASS. “But we cannot hope to win merely upon the | recital of the achievements of our party, brill- inant as they have been, any more than our ad- | versaries can hope to succeed on their platforms of glittering promises, The past is certainly | useful to usin so far as it demouttrates the ability of our party to redeem its pledge: and its abil- | ity to govern, in a broad and enlightened way, | a free and progressive people, “Our pledges have been kept, all eave one, | and I greatly mistake the temper of the repub- |lican party if it will be contented until that | pledge is made good. Our honor is pledged to continue the contest for a free and honest lot until this question is settled in the right. | “Theta free people should cast a free vote and have it honestly reeorded and returned is the dream and determination of the republican erty and the despair asd nightmare of the rat. It is the pride of the republican | party that it never yet has committed an assault upon: the freedom of the ballot. “The entire vocabulary of political crimes has grown vut of attempts to describe assaults of democracy upon the freedom of the ballot and fair play in the exercise of franchise, us the individual words have been made intelligible by democratic practices “No question bas ever been permanently ret- ed and never will be. finally determined until it is settled in the right and nntil every citizen, | white or black, east or west, north or south, | can approach the ballot box with absolute se curity and have his vote counted with absolute honesty. None of us can rest aasured that our | liberties are safe unless the votes of all men are safe. Itis not the negro alone who is disfran- chised: it is every American. “The contest before us assumes all ite cifi- culties from the fact that we enter the Yotes come from the south, which is kept per- manently solid thro tual breach of | the guarauties of the Constitution of the United | tes. of Harrison, as also did Senator Hiscock and | President and that eight would not vote for | Mr. Blaine. | did not indicate definitel; | serted that this feilure by the CONVENTION COMMITTEES.
