In the Criminal Court today Assistant Dis- trict Attorney Taggert called the attention of the court to the case of Edward Smallwood, a colored boy, indicted for the murder of Edward Tenney by # stab in the heart on February 15, and stated that it was on the assignment for to- day. The prisoner was brought up and Mr. Tag- gert stated that his counsel (Memrs. G. kh. French and Howard P. Okie) had withdrawn from the ease. Mr. Campbell was a member of one of the oldest families m the city. He was a man goodness of heart and amiability of disposition wns a source of pleasure to his friends. He was an artist of no mean ability. Having had a severe attack of grip in the past winter he never recovered his wonted good health. Maggie Wilson-Young has the sympathy of her many friends in the lows of her uncle, Mr. Samuel Mantford Wilson, one of California's most distinguished lawyers, Mr. Wilson had a wide circle of friends in Washington, among whom are Justices Field and Harlan, Senators Stewart, Stanford, Felton, Allison and Jones, The Inte Justice Miller had been a personal friend of many year, — Held for Stealing @ Bicycle. Saturday night Policeman Barnes of the eighth precinct arrested two young men on a charge of stealing a bicycle. He recovered the bicycle from where they had attempted to dispose of it. The prisoners gave their names as Thomas White and George Collins, and the bicycle was claimed by Mr. Samuel Davis of No, 1135 5th street northwest. The case was called in the Police Court today and the pris- oners plead guilty to charge of grand lar- ceny. ‘They were held in $500 bonds for the grand jury. >- The Arlington Co-operative Brokerage Co. Saturday afternoon Lieut. Kelly and Preeinet Detective Raff raided the office of the Arlington Co-operative Brokerage Company at No. 620 F street and arrested James S. Humphrey, the general manager, on a charge of violating the lottery law. The plan of this company was similar to many co-operative concerns in Phila- delphia, which ended so disastrously to their members. The company, it is alleged, was made up of classes to run thirty-five weeks, and the persons who were fortunate enough to win at the drawings received $31.50 cash or an order for $35 worth* of merchandise. Thove who were not #0 fortunate had to remain in the company thirty-five weeks, when the policy peers nee and they were supposed to receive the amount ‘stated. Many persons whose policies matured, it is alleged. failed to receive the money and in suite at law they got judgment aguinst the company. Several months ago the company was ine ted under the laws of West Virginia, the capital stock being 10,000, but it is chirged that but little of the money was ever paid in.
