It is said that between 7,000 and 8,000 granite cutters are now locked out. The national com- mittee has issued from its headquarters at Con- cord, N.H., and sent to this city an address “to the workingmen of the United States and all fair-minded men of whatever station in life.” ‘This address says: We have now thrust on us by the New England Granite Manufucturers’ Association « lockout of all granite eutters,pav- ing cutters and quarrymen in the employ of that association. ‘Thix qnarrel is not of our seeking. A Scene Witnessed at Newark, N. J., Yester- day Morning. Thousands of persons stood in Bruce street, Newark, N. J., yesterday morning and saw a horse slowly roasted to death by electricity. It was a gruesome sight. for at times spiteful little tongues of flame shot out from the suffering animal's hoofs and mouth. After ten minutes of torture the horse was dead. Four horses and a stage were hired from a livery firm on Halsey street by members of the Arion Singing Society for a May ride. The stage, gaily decorated with bunting, was driven up Springfield avenue about 11 o'clock, the thirty occupants enjoying themselves hugely. When Bruce street was reached stopped suddenly and the rollicking were thrown forward forcibly. The four horses fell to the pavement and the driver, Samuel Coles of 87 Springfield avenue, a young colored man, yelled, “For God's sake cut the lines.” He sat as stiff asa statue, unable to release his hold on the reins. Every boy and man in the vehicle got more or less of an electric shock and in less time than it takes to tell it they were out of the coach. One of them responded to Cole's cries, drew a knife and severed the lines close to the driver's hands. He was flung staggering across the street by an electrie current which traveled through the knife blade. Coles jumped to the ground and ran to, the horses, which were plunging madly. Catching the bit of one he received a shock which flung him back rome yarda. ‘The horses jumped and plunged until three of them broke loose. But the fourth became ex- hansted by the continuons passage of the elec- trie current through its body aud fell with ite neck to a trolley pole. By this crowd of several hundred per- sons had collected, but no one could do any- thing for the suffering animal, whose body was so highly charged with electricity that no one could touch it. When at length two linemen ived and made some repairs to the trolle wire an attempt was made to strip the dead a: mal of its harness, but it could not be done. When the bit was taken out of the mouth the flame followed it. The body was not removed for some hours. The three horses which eseaped were taken back to the stable and a veterinary surgeon declares they will not be fit for work for two weeks. ‘The May riders proceeded on the excursion drawn by four other horses. Many of them were badly shaken up, but none seriously in- jured. The power house of the New Jersey Traction Company. which owns the trolley wires and poles, is'a block away from the scene of the An electrician said the current hed he pole because of defective insu- aand through the poles into the ground nt it to the steel rails, shocking the horses when they stepped on the track. ree A WONDERFUL WELL. An Outlet for a Subterranean Sea of Oil, Gas and Salt Water. ‘There is much excitement at Bellaire, Ohio, over a wonderful well on Pawpaw creek, near Saiem, a village on the Cleveland and Marietta railroad, fifteen miles south of Summerfield, Noble county. A well was drilled to the depth of fourteen hundred feet about nineteen years ago. Oil or gas not being found, it was aban- doned. Several years later water and gas com- menced coming from the hole in great force, which threw the tubing out. That gave it a chance, and it washed out a large cavity, forty feet in diameter. Six or seven years ago it ceased to flow. Jacob Martz. about two years ago, filled the hole with stone and earth, and built a large barn on stone pillars, one of which stood in the center of the cavity.
