THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. ar caosey s. NOYES. THE EVENING STA® hasa regular and permanent circulation im Washington three times larger than that of any other paper in the city. As a local NEWS paper and Advertising Medium it has no competitor. Yesterday's political events were interesting in both parties. Instructions for the renomi- nation of the President were given in Mary- land by the republican convention, and virta- ally agreed to in Ilinois, to be ratified by the action of the convention today. Other note- worthy although not unexpected occurrences fm the state republican conventions were strong. if carefully guarded, free coinage declarations in California and unequivocal anti- free coinage declarations in Counecticat. On the democratic side the tariff was the princi- Pal issue, indeed, almost the only issue Presented. Wisconsin democrats, it is true, launched a bolt at the silver agitators while as- serting that there should be “no tariff taxa- tion exe-pt for revenue.” Both m Michigan and in Wisconsin the averments of that party ere drawn so freely and boldly that the stout- est “reformer” in the land would be gratified and satisfied with them. Carlisle or Morrison would mereiy have imparted, if he had com- Posed the resolutions, a little more Philosophr—he could not have adapted them better to the purposes in view. It is to be noticed that the Wisconsin democrats, both in platform and nominees, made strenuous efforts to retain the German Lutherans aud Catholies who voted with them at the last state election on the educational issue. If these eiforts are successful it will be the first time im national politics that the re- publicans have lost in large numbers at the Presidential election elements that have as- werted their independence or their idiosyn- erasy im the previous state election. The chief significance of these northwestern democratic conventions is no’ in the fact that they have @eclared against tree silver, or for Cleveland as their candidate, but that they have with virtual unanimity instructed their delegates to Vote a8 4 nuit aud to vote for the man of their Whrarerns Ax» Wien Ladies’ Laundered, 33.
