Capt. Lusk, he said, assured him that if the | pipe was inid the lamps would be erected. THE RAILROAD QUESTION. After remarks concerning the railroad pro- ject Mr. Ramey offered a resolution, which was adopted, and which called upon Congress | to revoke the charter of the Brightwood Rail- | way Company for failing to meet the require- ments of the act chartering the company and approved October 18, 1888. it was stated that the house of the Judson Pneumatic Company had been sold and the machinery removed, and Mr. Ramey thought that if these facts were made known to the committees of Congress they would not hesi- tate to act favorably upon a petition to charter @ new company. THE STATUS OF THE FRANCHISE. Continuing the discussion Mr. Ramey re- ferred to the Judson company as a defunct corporation, and said that they were at present only preventing the securing of the franchise by a good company that would put on eficient service. In conclusion Mr. Ramey suggested that a mass meeting of the citizens be held to discuss the matter and tuke some action, and upon motion it was decided to hold such a meeting ‘Thursday evening of next week. A motion to change the regular monthly meeting from Friday to Thursday evening was laid over for a month. After short addresses by the outgoing andin- coming president the meeting adjourned. ———— The Gunton Temple Memorial Chure The annual business meeting of the U Presbyterian Church was held on last Thursday evening. Especial interest sttaches to this volume by reason of the autobiographic character of several of the essays, while the others, ‘*Fontainebleau,” ‘*The Lantern Bearers,” ‘The Old Pacific Capital,” *‘Dreams,” “*Beggars,” &c., will rank with the author's finest work in this field of literature. ESSAYS ON GERMAN LITERATURE. By Prof. H. H. BOYESEN. 12mo, 81.50. The spirit and animating forces of German literature are admirably set forth in this book, the personal and anecdotal element bringing the leading fizures well into the foreground. The different phases of the wenius of Goethe and of Schiller, the evolutions of the German novel and the influence of the romantic ‘school are the principal themes. THE DUCHESS OF ANGOULEME And the Two Kestorations. From the French of Im- bert de Saint-Amand. Famous Women of the French Court. 12mo, with portrait, 81.25. ‘The daughter of Louis XVI and of Marie Antoinette is the heroine of this volume, her early years having been pictured in “The Youth of the Duchess of Angou- leme,” recently issued. It treats entertainingly of the life and of the great personages of Louis XVIII's court and gives a vivid picture from the royalist point of view of the dramatic episode of the return of Na- poleou and te hundred days. *.*Sold by all booksellers, or sent, postpatd, by CHARLES SCRIBNER’S SONS, 1t ‘743 and 745 Broadway, New York.
