2 THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D.C., MONDAY. FEBRUARY 22. 1892. THE WEST INDIES AT THE FAIR. Preparations in Progress for Exhibits at the Chicago Exposition. Mr. F. A Ober, the special commissioner of the world’s fair, now in Puerto Rico, writes that avery lively interest bas been awakened im that island in the exposition and a number of valuable collections have already been offered for exhibition. A very attractive dis- play will be made of native woods, in regard to which the local commissioners will make spe- cial effort, and the work has already been be- gun. Of mines the island has few of ay kind, though when discovered there were reports of mach gold, especially in the rivers of the west- ern part, and it is still found in some of the streams, but not mined toany extent. Some very fine specimens of galena are aid to have been found. One resident will exhibit sirups, oils and extracts of native plants and fruits, &e., and is already engaged in the manufacture of @ very excellent Florida water. of which samples will be sent. This would appear especially appropriate from the fact that it was from this isfend Ponce de Leon sailed in search ©¢ the fountain of youth and the house he built and cecupied is still shown. Full photo- graphic views of it will be displayed. The exposition commissioner to the West Indies writes from St. Thomas. shat much interest in the coming fair has been aroused in that island and preparations are being made to make a creditable display. A large relief map of wn of Charlotte Amalia, the chief port, showing the surrounding bills ana harbor, b: been suggested. The town is one of the most Beautiful in the tropics. It has a splendid setting and the harbor is famed for its safety and commodiousness. This attractive exhibit would undoubtedly excite much interest at Chicago. Around this as nucleus will be grouped the various products and manu- factures of the three islands of St. Thomas, St. Johns and Santa Croz. They will consist of sugar, bay rum, rum, fiber plants, native handi- work. £2, Some beautiful Spanish lace will be sent. A fine collection of native woods, over two hundred varieties, will be shown by the civil engineer, Mr. Carl Berg, many of them very valuable for cabinet and ornamental work. A large exhibit is also being prepared of excel- lent tortoise shell work by Mr. Orlando McCon- ney, the livrarian of the Athen#um. No action has yet Len taken by the government, but th imterest shown by private parties will insure @ geod display. ———___---—____ ‘Typographical Union Nom!nations.
