WORK OF THE BRAVE MEN. CRIPPLES_BURNED IN THE! BEDS. Terrible Scenes at the Destruction of the Indianapolis Surgical Institute. Ixpraxarouis, Ixp., Jan. 22.— ‘The Indianapo- lis Surgical Institute burned last night, the flames breaking out just before midnight in the old annex, a block separated from the main building by justa narrow space. Before the fire was discovered the whole interior was ablaze. Tho institute had about 500 inmat most of whom were helpicss cripples. When the fire department arrived the windows were full of screaming, moaning cripples and the scepe was one of horror yond description. ‘The work of rescue war gun at once with Indders and the inmates were removed with great rapidity, but at least thirty were injured, some terribly In the con- fusion and excitement it is almost impossible to get numer, but some of the worst hurt are Mrs. Gales of Madison, Ind., fell from a ladder with a child in ber arms, internally injured; Kato Elstrang, Indianapolis, fatally burned; Mrs. Taomas, Indianopolis, fatally burned Fannie Dreden, Momphis, Tenn., badly burne: recovery doubtful. FIFTEEN REPORTED SUFFocATEN. There is a story that fifteen or more invalids in the annex were suffocated, but this cannot be either verified or disproved. The patients were carried to various hospitals and hotels as fast as vescued and nobody knows who is miss- ing, Oue girl praa seen to comie to a window anda moment later fall back into the tlames. After the fire had been in progress haif un hour twenty women were found standing on a rear roof just ready to jump. ‘They had escaped attention in the confusion, though screaming at the top of their voices. ‘They were rescued im safety. It was a veritable fire trap. The old annex and main building were nothing more or less than old-fashioned four- story business blocks, the main building at the corner of Georgia and Ilinois streets. and the annex, immediately east of it, fronting on Georgia street. ‘The halls were narrow, ax were also the stairways; there were uo proper exits, ho conveniences to be used in case of fire. ‘The fire originated in the second floor of the cast annex neag the east wall and burned that building, spreading from it to the main build- | ing. The patients in the main building were all gotten out, and amid indescrible scenes uf excitement and borror many were rescued from the annex and it és hoped that ail were taken out. _ PANDEMONIUM REIGNED. The attendants barely awakened all of the pa- tients, and in the haljs and upper rooms pan- demonium reigned. Sbriek after’ shriek for help went up as the inmates realized their ter- rible situation.
