4 THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: FRIDAY January 8, 1892. CRKOSBY 5. NOYES THE EVENIN Permanent circulation in Washington three times larger than that of any other paper fm the city. As m local NEWS paper and Advertising Mediam it has ne compet Washington is evidently to have a great Epis- opal Cathedral, of impressive size and impos- ing and attractive architecture, surrounded by institations of learning and of mercy. The liberal donations of land by Washingtonians for cathedralsite and endowment, the local interest ‘and enthusiasta in the project indicated practi- cally by numerous declarations of intention to subscribe hancisomely for its accomplishment, and the subscriptions aid offers of wealthy men ium other cities, showing s national interest in lishment of such an institution at the national capital, furnish convincing evidence that the project will be realized upon a grand seale, worthy of the capital, and creditable to the founders and builders of the cathedral. As the Roman Catholics and the Methodists in their new universities, and Baptists in the develop- ment of Columbian University, propose to be strongly and adequately represented at the center of national life, so do the*Episcopa- Tians of the whole republic in the proposed cathedral institutions. Washington heartily welcomes them «ll The founding of the cathedral here while arousing no jealousy in Washington's sister city, Baltimore, will inevi- tably lead to a separation of the capital city | and the adjacent and dependent county from the diocese of Maryland and the creation here of « distinct diocese, thus contribut- fag to le dignity and gratifying Tocal sentiment. In the extension of Washing- ton's educational facilities by the establish- ment of institutions in the District which will attract bere students and men of learning at Jeast from all parts of the republic, the people ef the capital are profoundly interested with- cut regard to religious denomination, and are likely to show that interest in practical shape. ‘They did so in the cuse of the Catholic Uni- versity, notably so in the case of the Meth- odist University, and they will probably follow these precedenta. As the capital Washington has in libraries, museums, and government in- stitutions and collections, unsurpassed educa- tional treasures to offer to American students, and to the invitation of the wealth of these resources Washington has always been ready to add whatever may be necessary in the way ‘The TRUTH'N bear repeating—No other house DOES-EVER DID-CGR EVER WILL—seil such STERLING QUALITIES at such LOW PRICES as WE quote, Sazs Axp Comraxy. Large subscriptions from other parts of the republic are expressly conditioned upon Wash- ington’s dispiay of earnestness and readiness to work for herself and for the success of the project, and the appeal to the people of the ity in this, as in other similar instances, will doubtless mect with a hearty and liberal re- sponse. Here at the heart of the republic, im which political freedom gives stimulus to thought, breadth to culture, and refinement to Civilization, learning and the spirit of enquiry ean be best imparted.
