STAR kas a regular and permanent circulation in Washington three times larger than that of any other paper im the cit. As a local NEWS pnper and Advertising Medium it has no competitor. As generally expected Senator Sherman has secured a renomination. His majority is large enough to gratify his friends and not so largeas to discredit his opponents. While this dis- tinguished leader of the republicans in the Senate was on all grounds compatible with a broad policy entitled to the additional honor he has received, itis fully admitted by his friends that his energetic opponent has never shown greater popular strength in his brilliant and somewhat checkered career. Senator Sherman will have been fifty years in the service of the United States as member of Con- gress and asa cabinet minister at the close of the term to which he has been chosen. In all the history of the republic there have been few such public careers of uninterrupted and high service. It is a service devoted to his state ns well as to bis country, but it is = service entirely apart from thestate government. This is the singular fact. In the old days, when the republic was young, the giants among the country’s public men wore trausferred, as a rule, from the state to the federai government as it was supposed their services were demanded in some particu- lar emergency. And even now, when the gen- eral government overtops the state govern- ment in the public mind and in the history of Fox Mcrrs Reovcep. ‘We have concinded to close out our en- tire stock of Fur Muffs and have made the following reductions: 83.50 to #2.50, 4.25 to $3.00, £5.00 to 832.60 Care Seax Morrs, $4.00 to $3.00, 83.00 to $2.25, Fes Carzs Repvcen. There is something more than either an excuse for de- feet or a compliment to his great adversary m the remark of ex-Gov. Foraker in his caucus speech after the nomiaation: “I was not aware at the start, as we have since come to know, that we Lad to fight not ouly those republicans of Obio who were against us, but because it was grand old Jobn Sherman on the other side it was the whole United States against ua.” —_———or——— From the cold, cheerless “roof of the world” — Pamir—that is giving such trouble to the Eng- lish, Russians and Chinese in diplomacy—to the alleged lost continent of Limuria, in the Indian Ocean, the epeculations as to the seat of Para- Gise have been varied, vague and more or less ing. A learned railroad president down in the land of tar, pitch and turpentine once wrote a book to prove that the first pair lived in a now sunkenisland or cont.nent a thousand miles or more from India and be made a very plausible theory of the earth's history from comet to diluvian cataclysm. Tariff reform is the specialty of the clubs, whereas they do say that it is not the principal intention of the democratic managers in the Fifty-second Con- sress—at least not until after next November. += As evidence of the purity of blue grass polities, Kentuckians are proudly pointing to the fact that members of the legislature are paying for ther own whisky and cigars.
