Little or nothing stated in the com- munication printed on Saturday, to which he essayed a reply, was in reality contradicted by him, though a pretense was made to that effect. ‘In fact its statements could not well be gain- said. Every allegation made therein was abso- lately true, and, in spite of ali Mr. Thomas says, the fact remains that the electric light company has not kept faith with its customers, whe ivate individuals or public officials, and that it has entered intoundertakings which it has not carried out, and which it must have known at the time it conld not carry out. That gentleman's claim that the company is utilizing all the power it can get and 1s trying to get more was conceded. It does not, however, meet the point at issue, which is that its man- agement had no business to agree to furnish ht until it had sufficient power to produce it. ‘Neither will the public accept the view ad- vanced by Mr. Thomas that the company acted wisely in leaving the streets of the city in dark- ness in order that private customers might be supplied, or that it had a right to do this. On the other hand, that action was « most danger- ous and wholly inexcusable procedure on its part and if the pablic authorities consented to they also laid themsclves open to grave sen- sure. Ax to the case of the Corcoran Gallery, it was, of course, very kind and wholly unselfish in Mr. ‘Thomas to propose to the trustecs of that m- Stituticn to keep it open Sunday evenings, when there is less than the usual demand in the city for electric lights, thus enabling hira to find acustomer foranarticle ke could not then Otherwise well. For the same reason he would doubtless be glad to sce all the places of amusement in the city and the marke: houses, as well. kept open Sunilay evenings. In conclusion, I repeat, “Let us have light,” Rot explanations that do notexplain. FLL. pbesanteto I. C. A. New Year Reception. Among the members who will then take their seats will be Col. James G. Berret, who was a member of the same body fifty-five years ago. Col. Still retaining a Winter residence here, he some time ago renewed his alleginuce to his old home, and bis neighbors returned the compliment thus paid them by nominating him without opposition, and elect- ing him to the same position they honored him with so long ago. Notwithstanding the great inpse of time, not 4 few who voted at the election tuen were active and interested parti- cipants in the poli last fall, an 1 among his suj porters now were several of those who oppased as weil a8 a number of those who favored him then.
