The good weather this week has been taken advantage of by bicyclists, and several short trips have been made on the country roads. The Arlingtons made an interesting run iast Sunday. They weet to Frederick by rail Sat- urday night and rode home on their wheels Sunday. Mr. Frank Larcombe, who is a mem- ber of the Nomads, rode both ways on his wheel. ‘Ihe Cycle Euchre Club, which is made up of members of the Nomad Club, met at the resi- dence of Miss Keefer on Capitol Hill this week. ‘Miss May AtLee won the first lady's prize, while Mr. Gus Davison won the first gentleman's favor. The booby prizes were captured by Miss Baldwin and Mr. Bromwell. Tuesday evening the Nomads were enter- tained by Mr. and Mrs. Wm. T. Robertson at their home on M street. Laet night the members of the Arlingtons en- joyed a banquet at Losckam’s. Bicyclists who enjoy the bright side of life sometimes have a taste of the unpleasant side. Such was the case with Mr. Henry Tinker, who went out for a ride in the Smithsonian grounds, ath that was not intended for vehicles, and the park watchman required him to go to court this morning. Mr. ‘linker being a stranger in the city the judge took his personal bonds. . F Miss Jennie Campbell. a teacher in'the High School, met with an accident while riding her bicycle yesterday near the Baltimore and Ohio depot. A wagon driven by a colored man named ‘Thomas Betters ran against her, but fortunately she escaped injury. Her bicycle was damaged to the extent of 36, but as Betters paid the bill he was not prosecuted. pote ay DISTKICT GOVERNMENT. A MARKET OKDER. In view of the alleged construction placed on section 12 of the order of October 2, 1891, with reference to the allotment of spaces on B street west of 7th street to farmers for market pur- poses that it implies an obligation on the part of the representative of the District govern- ment in charge of said market to collect a fee from said farmers for the cleaning of such es, the Commissioners today ordered: t it is the intent of said order merely to authorize said officer to receive and disburse voluntary collections for said purpose.” DISBURSING CLERK DARNEILLE’S FIDELITY. Recently the Commissioners received from Mr. Edwin Wartield. vice president of the Fidelity and Deposit Company of Baltimore, a letter inquiring if Disbursing Clerk Darneille of the District government is giving satisfac- tion in the performance of his duties. Auditor l’etty was requested to reply to the inquiry and this is what he says: “Mr. Darneille is a careful and accurate dis- Lursing officer, whose fidelity and integrity have never been questioned. From personal knowledge based upon daily contact I bear willing testimony to his good habits and ex- emplary conduct. Mr. Darneille’s accounts have been audited from July 1 to November 1, 1891, and found correct in every particular.” WANT THE COMMISSIONERS TO STAND FIEM. ‘At @ representative meeting of Christian and temperance people held in Gen. Green Clay Smith's church last evening,” says Mrs. Sarah D. La Fetra ina letter to the Commis- sioners today, “it was voted unanimously to send an appeal to your honorable body asking you to stand firmly by the proposition that no Saloons shall be licensed in Hell's Bottom.” In concinding her letter Mrs. La Fetra says: “I take pleasure in transmitting this appeal with the assurance that the churches od the better eclemen: of the city are your strong supporters in this matter."* MISCELLANEOUS. W. F. Mercier, an old resident of Loudoun county, Va., died at his residence, near Hamil- ton, in that county, yesterday morning. Mr. Mercier was the anti-secession candidate for the legislature in his county at the outbreak of the war and made a vigorous canvase for the Union. He took a prominent part in the or- ganization of the Union government at Wheel- ing and Alexandria, Va., and was a state sena- tor for six years. An important decision was handed down by the supreme court of Chile yesterday. ft was to the effect that under the Chilenn constitution the members of the late Baimacedun congress are not civilly responsible for te issue of money during the revolution. ‘This decision is a great relief to those interested, as all properties and monies were tied up pending the outcome of the case, and many of the members who had independent fortunes found thetuselves abso- lutely penniless for a time.
