Dow’r KUN THE Risk of your ng weil of t Particulars of Her Husband's Alleged Bra- tality Related to the Court. Loxpox, Dec. 2.—The proceedings in the suit of the Countess Russell for separation from Earl Russell continued in court today. There was a large crowd present, but not so many ladies as yesterday, the testi- mony having been of a revolting nature. In her testimony today the countess reiterated her insinuations of the unnatural relations between Prof. Roberts and the earl. She stated that the separation from her husband bad been regarded by her as only temporary. It came about on advice of a physician and on account of the state of her health, caused by the earl's bratal | treatment. Financial considerations were not the only obstacles to a making up with the earl. Still it was true, as she stated yesterday that to avoid publicity «he was willing to with draw her suit if a proper allowance were maile. In her testimony she further stated that th earl had taunted her with the fact that he paid for her underclothing. She had repaid the money to him afterward. Dr. Godson was the next witness. He testi- fied that he had attended the countess and that at certain periods she was subject to hys- te At such periods she might magnify small matters into import Mrs. Dick, the countess’ maid, testifi firming the evidence given by the to the earl’s crucity to animais and h his wife. He had threatened to chastise ber, and had in fact harshly handled her. Mrs. Dick also intimated that the relations between the carl and Prof. Roberts were improper. Mrs. Vaie, who had acted as nurse to the countess, testified that she had known the countess to be thrown naked from bed by the earl. She bad carried her from the floor to ai adjoining room and brought her back to cou sciousness. With the presentation of this testimony the evidence for the countess closed. SIR CHARLES RUSSELL'S ADDRESS. ‘The audience craned their necks in their en- deavor to see Sir Charles Russell as he arose to present the case for Earl Russell, Great in- terest was manifested to hear this celebrated lawyer defend his noble client from the charges made against him, and there was not a stir in the court room as he cloquently spoke in de- fense of the earl. | "Bir Charics im substance aid that he would limit himself to the broad iseue of the case So far as the separation of Countess and Earl Rus- sell was concerned all that he would way was that the lady was at liberty to leave ber bus- band when she liked. ‘the sole object of the present suit was to force the payment of ali- mony by the earl. a Sir Charles, referring to the Roberts inci- dent, deciared that the countess, through veiled and Obscure inuendo, simply desired to wound her husband. She was afraid to strike open, Why, Sir Charles asked, bad the other side not made that serious allegation honestly, straightforwardly and directly? Unices the suggestion iu connection with Roberts was meant to be treated as a grave charge, to be gravely considered and dealt with, a greater act of cruelty could not have been performed in bringing it forward. ‘8Gir Charis then procesded to resent the of cruelty. He asked the jury not to be carrced away by a clever and engaging woman telling them a story that was uatruc im all ite esential details—a woman 60 perverted as to put forward the Roberts incident m order to support hopeless case by odious imputations. These inrputations, Sir Charles declared, were mace not only against the carl, but against another man, whose name and repu- tation it bave been blasted by them if be had not stood high iu the opinion of his col- es. At this point the court adjourned. —_—— ABOUT 875,000 TAKEN. ‘The Train Robbery Near St. Louis Becomes a First-Class Sensation.
