4 THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: CROSBY 8. NOYES. Washington three times than that of any other paper tm the city. As a local NEWS paper and Advertising Mediam tt has ne camyetitor. ee The republican executive committee which tmcets here next Monday will have s difficult task before it in the choice of a place for hold- ing the national convention. ‘The difficulty consists in the embarrassment of riches. So many cities make such strong claitas that it is not easy to say just where the convention should sit. Chicago, the one that has carried off the prize so often, does not appear very anxious for it now, having on its bands the world’s fair at the same time. New York, Warhing- ton, Cincinnati, Minneapolis, Detroit, Omaha, Ban Francisco and Pittsburg want it, and some of them will bid high for the honor. It can- not be sufely predicted that any one of these cities will be chosen. Chicago may be selected on the grounds of nearly central location, accommodations, and the influences upon the Politics of a section disposed to slip away from the republican fold. Washington is better situated for national conventions of all sorts than any otber place, and offers finer attrac- tions than any other. Unfortunately the cap- ital city has no political autonomy and controls no votes for either party asacity. This ought to recommend it on the score of perfect impar- tiality, since there is so much here to educate the citizen in broad patriotism. But foliticians prefer the incentives that make for party success in the shorter and narrower way. Under thege circumstances the capital will dis- cvunt its chances of securing the convention for almost any reasonable offer in cash. ——— The supreme council of the Farmers’ Alliance insession at Indianapolis is a distinctly less namerous, harmcnious and enthusiastic body than it was thought a month ago it would be. ‘The truth is that the alliance, although still an organization of weight in some of the states, fe not the same power it was even in those local- ities. The November elections withered the Lopes of those of its leaders who desired to put the alliance into national politics asa distinct entity. It correspondingly increased the in- fiuence of those who wished tc keep it aloof and confine its operations to the original sphere of action. At the present session of the supreme council one of the chief topics of con- sideration ie the third party. ‘The division of opinion seems to be sharp, with the “lay of the land™ favoring the policy of those who oppose the organization of a new national party. Nevertheless the signs are that a third party of Some pretensions will be in the field in 1892. a The colored people shoull not anticipate trouble in connection with the Grand Army encampment. There are no reasons for expect- ing that there will be any manifestations of prejudice and there is no occasion for inviting any displays of feeling. The only danger of friction in the matter arises from the possibility that mischief makers may excite the colored people by misrepresentations and exaggerations into drawing the color line themselves, and into assuming a distrustful. threatening and dicta- torial attitude toward their host on this occa- sion, the city of Washington, in which case any Prejudices that may exist, which would not otherwise be exhibited, may unhappily be in- flamed into activity. If the colored members of the G. A. K. do not excite themsflves until there is occasion for it all will go well. ——— + ‘There was a disposition shown by some mem- bers of the church congress at its first session to get on the same piatform with progressive scientists. The theory of evolution may notbe accepted fully by many cultivated churchmen ‘who are nevertheless disposed to look fxvora- Diy upon it as not incompatible with Scripture revelation andas affording a key to ercation not otherwise found. It is probable that dur- ing subsequent sittings the other side will be heard. The discussions are likely to provoke | Wide interest, far beyond the circles of the Protestant Episcopal church. —————-—___. ‘The lack of appreciation in some quarters of the commendable ambition of Mr. Schulteis to do thorough work as commissioner to study the immigration problem may cuggest the old slur that it is not always best for a government that which Mr. Schulteis has done which will throw the clearest light upon the immigration evils. ————~++=—___. ‘To the interesting historical sketch and ac- count of the resources, constitution, laws, &c., of Mexico just issued by the Bureau of Ameri- can Republics, in this aity, is appended a serie of useful directories, very important in the light of the commercial lations existing or impending with the sovt€ern republic. The bulletins of the bureau are prepared with mach care, and give valnble information re- Sarding all the republics of this hemisphere. —_—$—-— A few—very few—of the newspapers pub- lished in the fur interior of the country are in- ctined to criticise the government becanse there may possibly be a display of out naval strength in the harbor of Valparai seem as though there still exist a few of those who do not realize that “an ounce of preven- tion is worth a pound of cure.” + The Yuma Indians who pat a medicine man to death for not bringing rain are ® trifle radical in their modes of pro- cedure. Qne of the remarkable differences Detween the whites and the Indian is that with the latter the professor of medicine often takes as much risk as his patients do. +--+ Feople with literary ambition will presently be striving to obtain small appointments in the departments for the sake of being dismissed by an irate superior and thereby in- troduced to the public. s a According to Commissioner Schulteis’ ob- servations, the imported citizens, even when they are desirable when they start for this country, are certain to be demoralized on the way. ———+++-_—+ Nobody said it was cold, with a hostile em- phasis, this morning. In fact the present cold- news of the American people bas about it a flavor of health and heartiness. Frank Almy, the murderer, was mored to tears during the trial is very touch- ing. He should not be unnecessarily dis- tressed by any delay in the proceedings. 2 Kansas deserves credit for originality pf methods. The ides of choosing a lobbyist on salary to do Senstor Peffer's work for him is ikeiy to be more aovel than effective. —_<- The crack of the policeman’s pistol and the ‘ominous rattle of the erap dice are heard with slarming frequeney. The waruings in these directions have been startlingly intense of late. = ‘The foreign bock-writer who seeks to get even with the descriptive facility of the Amer- fean reporter by giving @ peu picture of him almost invariabiy makes a sad buugie of it. a St. Louis suffered severely by fire yesterday. ‘The “fieud™ weems to have been perambulating also around the republic at places as far apart as Beooklyn aud Miruespolis 2 oe ‘The Kansas man who shot himself with « cigar ia bis mouth might have substituted a few cigarettes aad saved smumitait.on. so ‘The Grand Army mecting will be a great thing for Washington and also a great thing for ‘the Grand Army people. a From Ocala to Indianapolis is only one year, Mcasarqd Ly time, but to the once enthtriastic @iliance maa it is eternity.
