HERE, of course. pi The new balf-dollar, quarter-dolfir and dime coins will be handsome, largely because the director of the mint and his assistants, while greatly beautifying original models, have not departed widely from them. The principal features of the new designs are three: 1. The livelior attitude of the eagle, the feet and wings of which are outspread. The bird of freedom looks it; the vulture characteristics of the Present coins are missing, and the whole effect of the national bird, as newly engraved, is striking and satisfactory. 2. The substitution of « large profile head for a small sitting figure emblematic of Liberty is an inspiration. 3. ‘The application of the improved Liberty to the dime, with minor changes, gives the new ten-cent picce even moro marked improvement than that noted on the larger coins, for the same figure used on the obverse of ail three coins shows to greater advantage ‘There is everything to bring you here. — | The magnitude of the siock—the ty! A rigid criticism might eliminate altogetber the Phryg- ian cap from the diee, as it is the emblem of the enfranchisod and not of the always free, and the dominant race of the United States in history, wealth and numbers bas ever been a race of freemen. But the capseems to be a fix- ture among republican symbols, and, after all, its sabstitate—the red man’s topknot of feathers—is a barbarian’s toggery, not at all suggestive of an advanced civilization like ours. ‘The mint designs, as officially described and as ‘they sppear from authorized illustrations, are very clover and reflect credit on those by whom they were conceived and executed. there's something among them that'll Just strike yow. ‘Thoy run up to fifteen- ‘Year sizes from four. The par- Yiamentary leaders of the opposition were among the authors of the arrangement on the part of Brazil, and they at least would be estopped from any such action. The value of the advantages accruing to the United States may be inferred from the following statement in the South American Journat of London, and the course of England in placing any obstruc- tion she may be able to place in the way of continued friendship and commercial inter- change between the two republics may also fairly be inferred from the facts here con- ceded: ‘The business results of the reciprocity measures of Mr. Blaine are already discernible in the trade with the United States. Even En- glish companies operating in Brazil are now purchasing their supplies largely iu the United States to secure the benefit of the reduction of 25 per cent in duty.” —+0-—____. Until there is more information concerning Minister Egan and his doings it is veither » time for those who have constituted themselves his champions to back down from their po- sitions nor for those who bave doubted him to change their views. Little or nothing has de- veloped to furnish a basis for any decided opinion. As long as Chile likes him well enough to refrain from asking his recall. the republic will not be apt to recall him on the strength of vague suggestions of his unpopularity. And while Chile remains sullen and sulky and treats Giseourteously the reasonable and civil request of the United States concerning the republic's murdered sailors, she will not be in a position to ask with good grace anything from the United States. It is to be hoped that the elec- tion of a president and resumption of the forms of settled government by Chile will be preliminary to her resumption of national common sense and international good manners. somewhere between the limits, LONG PANTS SUITS begin at @3 and run to $20. The president may be right in his central conten- tion—that congress has no constitutional xy his veto—but be needs more suspending civil government with the popular legislative branch against him. At the best his action is a deplorable ne- cessity. The United States will sympathize with the Brazilian people in their civil strug- gle, and with the new republic, which is sur- rounded by so many dangers. A strong re- publican government has never been devel- oped exeept through trial and tribulation. The northern American republic will hope that its southern neighbor may run the gauntlet suc- cessfully, a The effect of the disturbances in Brazil might be to throw the coffve market into confusion if the powers that be should seize the coffee crop now on hand.
