The Veteran Hamline Methodists Enter- tained by the Young People. The celebration of “Oid People’s day” at Hamline M. E. Church was supplemented Inst night by further honors to the aged. About sixty of Hanilinc’s sexegenarians or better were guests of the younger folks at a supper, which was served, curiously enough, in the “infan class room. When the feast was done the satis- fied ones went into the lecture room and there had a pleasant time in company with numerous veteran Methodists from other churchea Mr. Thomas H. Martin sat amid the graceful palms that decorated the platform; he was chairman. Hisintroductory remarks were happily delivered anc weil received.'The assemblage then sang“Ob! led by Mr. Richard Willet, and ed té prayer by Rev. J. T. D. cm. A felicitous address of welcome was made by Mr. Edward Williams, one of the young people, and to this response was made by dir. John'H. Benton. Mr. Benton repre- sented the old folks, anJ, after thanking the young people for the kindness shown, he pro- ceeded to discuss the easy possibilities of “Old People's day.” A corsilerable portion of his speech was devoted to expressing some of the gratification felt by the aged satuts because of the attention shown them and their services by Tue Star. Mrs. Dr Todd, the originator of the celebra- tion, read very pathetically a selection—“Out- lived Her Usefulness. ‘This was followed by a character sketch Sel Hace to Mt the Farm.” in which re. J. Riffard Mickle, Mr. George Terry, Ida O'Neal, Miss Fannie Glasco and Mr. Harri son FE. Crook did some excellent vocal and histrionic work. ‘The* singing of “Blest Be the Tie That Binds” concluded the formal program. ‘The remainder of the evening was spent in the most pleasantly social way. All the arrangements for the entire celebra- tion were in the hands of the foliowing named committee: ‘Thomay H. Martin, chairman; Todd, Mrs. H. A. Fifteenth Street M. E. Church Sunday cele- brated “Good Tidings day” by two services. In the morning Rev. L. A. Thirlkeld, the pas- tor, made an address on the relations of the Sunday school to pastor and people, and in the evening on the work of the Tract Society. The services partook of an antumnal character and the church was beautifully decorated with fruits, flowers, sheaves of wheat, corn in the ear, autumn leaves, &¢c. The Sunday school practically had charge of the evening service, at which the church was packed to overflowing. Last evening a largely attended reunion was held at the same place to celebrate the home coming of those absent during the past few months, —- Death of Dr. J. W. Porter. Dr. John W. Porter, recently an assistant chief in the census office, died at the Gurfield Hospital yesterday afternoon. Dr. Porter was from Illinois, but had resided in Washington for many years. He served in an important position in the quartermaster’s department during the war and at its close he was given a clerkship in the Treasury Department. He subsequently was superintendent of the treas- ury and then appomtment clerk for many years. During the incumbency of Secretary Morrill he acted as chief clerk of the depart- ad that position was offered him by Sen- herman when he became Secretary of the Treasury. Dr. Porter declined it, however. and accepted the office of disbursing clerk of the coast survey. which he held for several years, disbursing hundreds of thousands of dollars without a single error in his accounts. He re- sigued and went into private business, making maiderable money, which he subsequently lost in unfortunate investments. When the census office was organized he was made an as sistant chief and was oue of the most eficient employes in that bureau. He was « man of ex- celient attainments, had traveled extensively and had a wide cirele of friends. He dida good deal of literary work and many of his army sketches, as well as some dainty poems, have been published in Tue Star. His remains wero taken to the establishment . Harvey, where they can be seen by his friends until tonight, when they will be for- rded to Ottawa, Ill, his former home, for interment. He wasa man of generous 'im- pulses, kindly disposition, and during his life enjoyed the confidence and respect of some of the most prominent men in the country. His death will be deeply regretted by all who knew him. oie roe Jockey Injured.
