4 THE EVENING STAR WASHINGTON: TeRspar. October 6, 1891. CROSBY 8. NOYES. Editor. = = = THE EVENING STAR has « regular and permanent circulation in Washington three times lurger than that of any other paper Im the et As a local NEWS paper and Advertising Mediam tt bas ne competitor. ————— Religious, political, scientific and social bodies have, in times past, asser:bled in Wash- ington to discuss matters pertinent to the wel- fare of their rospective organizations; military and naval forces have had their ropresentatives in session here: a thousand minds bavo gathered together beneath the shadow of the great ob- elisk to discuss aubjects of more than ordinary interest; the nation’s legislators meet annually for the avowed purpose of benefiting the American people; but nono of these conven- tions ever contained within themselves a tithe of the influence for good Which may be found fn that greet assembly of mental and moral force which meets here tomorrow—the Methodist Ecumenical Conference. Five bun- dred delegates will answer the roll call. Three handred of there are domestic; the ro- Mainder come from forcign lands. In mere numerical strength the conference does not eclipse the records of conventions that have been held hore, but when it is remembered that these dve hundred men represent congre- gations whose census excoeds fifty-five millions ‘then the thoughtful among mankind will realize the magnitude of that power which is exercised by the Methodist Church. This conference differs materially from all other ecclesiastical conferences save only its predecessor of ten Years ago; it is the love feast where all tho vari- ous and, ia some respects, disagreeing ele- ments, blend in harmonious unity. Doctrines are laid aside and eccentricities of ereed tem- porarily vanish, the diverse ices of patrictiem and bumanity which rent the Methodist Episcopal! body in twain lack voeal expression; and believers in the Episcopacy embrace those of their brethren who belong to that branch which, after declar- ing against bishops and presiding eldere, lopped iteelf off and started an independent growth some sixty yeers ago. Methodism ir all its phases will be here, but even the keenest ob- server will fail to note anything like a shadow of Aissension. Fine-spun differential theories, each of its own denomiuational tint, lose their thread-like individuality in the warp and woof of the multi-hued garment of Methodism. ‘fo this gathering Great Britain bas contributed some of its brightest Wesleyan lights, and reprerent- atives aro hero of Australasian, French, West | was lance aud varied. but crude. ORDEKS TAKEN FOR COSTUMES ocotuaw AND MILLINERY. Hisronticar, Miztinzny. ‘Phe Garden of Eden was the first millinery eetab- Ushinent known in bistory. ‘The assortment of goods Importation, com- petition aud Hutchinson were then unknown. Eve's first bonnet was doubtless couspicuous for its sim- plicity and excessive brevity. Its fashion, however, was exclusive, a3 ae the styles to be found at J.C. Hutchinson's, 007 Penna. ave. We refer to those choice creations of art and Sntellect Just imported from London sud Paris, Mave you seen th Many Indian, African and Canadian churches. Amer- ican Methodism will have no cause to be ashamed of its quota, the list of delegates re- vealing names that must always be prominent in the religious interest of the present ceatury. Nor is all this mental force centered in the clergy; the lay representative ie brainy and worldly powerfnl. The story of Methodism's triumphant march, aa told by those men, can- not fail to be deeply interesting. At the first conference, held in London in 1831, much of the program was devoted to subjects more or less laudatory of ihe church, will be no such feature in the assembly. Subjects that are popular and that deal with actual conditions are to be debated by the broadest minds in the respective denom- inations represented. What has been done since the days of the Wesleys, Whitefield, Coke and Asbury will be allowed to speak for itself from the records; the conference promises to concern itself principally about the presentand the future. Directly, tucre can be uo legisla- tion as the result of the conferential delibera- tions, but every one recognizes the fact that conelusions reached hero will not be lightly set aside by those who govern the churches. Washingtonians who love religious oratory will have opportunities for indulgence such as may not soon, if ever, be duplicated; lotal pulpits will, for at least two Sabbathe, be filled with speakers from abroad of the highest order of eloquence—men whose names will be linked in Methodist nomenclature with those of William Morley Punshon and Matthew Simpson. The capital of the greatest republic the world ever knew is honored by the presence of the confer- ‘euce; the people of Washington will, doubtless, $0 far as it is in their power, be reciprocative. <r ‘The German-descended citizen who parades the streets and avenues of the capital today is first of all and altogether an American citizen. All of bis memory may not be of America, but all of his present associations, all of his aspira- tions for the futures for bimself and his family and descendants. are of and concerning America alone. The land of the settier’s adoption, the land of his cbildren aud bis children’s children, is inestimably dearer to him than any other. It is this thought and fecling that rises highest and sinks deepest and contains most of pleasure and hope for him and his country. + Is Balmaceda deai? This is the question raised by the Santiago correspondent of Galig- nani's Messenger. The rumor that the Amer- ican minister put out the story in order the better to conceal the fugitive Chilian president and that the latter is still and at abe American legation may have important conse- quences. The story seems wholly improbabie, but if it is believed, as stated, by the friends of the new administration, it may cause the mob toattack the legution. Such an event would render very serious a situation already greatly complicated. _ It is act so much the resignation as the rea- fon for the resignation of the New York repre- sentative on the national democratic commit- tee that hurts the party in its present situation. When the state convention turned out other democrats and permitted Tammany to shut the door in their faces it took a responsibility full of hazard. te 7 Should the report be established that the Hawaiien queen is dying of heart disease the situation there will become intensely interest ing. [tis seid that American influence in the spprouching elections will be predominant. ‘The sentiment in favor of annexation is repre- sented to bacm the increase. Meantime the Britixh government soems auxious to get con- trol of the islands. + Calamity candidates have for the most part Tealized that th out of harmony with the fail stylos this season and modified themselves secords ae oe The marriage in Philadelphia of Dr. Bachi daughter to Col. Forsyth and of Col. Forsyti’ daughter to Dr. Bache may present some very interesting complications of relationship in the course of time. As it is each of the ladies is the other's stepmother. ——— +2 ‘The evils pointed out by the Grand Jury are for the most part comparatively easy to remedy. As they are also of considerable im- Portance there is no reason to think that they will endure much longer. ——— + When President Harrison visited the mail- ear be would have had even more to interest im if be could bave bad a salary list to en- able bim to compare the work done with the smell pay it secures. -—— e - ‘The only course now open to the Marquis Leuville is to try to convines the public that he is Mr. Wilde in disguise. ee ‘The death of a king of Wurtemburg is not so fasportant now that there is an emperor in Germany. —-—_—_+=—____ Chili has all the free and casy ideas about arresting people that distinguish a new police- mau ee ‘The senatorial fight in Obio is vainly be- sought to make itself small.
