Mad they played throughout the trip as they id in the game with Beitimore their record would have Leen cousidersbly higher. Baltimore was humbied the score of 5 to; 1. It was so aarrowa margin from a white- | wash that the Orioles were very much discom- | fited. Each side played smartly in the tield, but Washington's work there was far better, as the two errors made were of no account in the score making. while both of the Baltimore mis- plays were made in the first inning and gave the Statesmen two ruus, enough to win the game. Foreman and McGuire and MeMahon and Robmson were the batteries. The Washington ‘wirler was far more effective, keeping the hits so well scattered that no two of them were made in the same inning. Modahon, however, was touched up pretty lively, and, though he improved as tue game went on, be worked in a losing gan: m the start. The first play of the game was a startler. Bal- timore took the bat first, and Welch, the first man up, bita ay that sailed out into right and jooked good for two bases sure. Donovan aurbied over toward it with his awkward gait and took it in his left Land at arm’s length, aralyzing the crowd for a moment. Tnen johnson and Yau Haltren struck out, with Werden hitting fora bese between them. Washington made two runs in the latter half. Murphy was seut down on balis and MeMahon | got the sun in his eyes as he reached for Dono- van’s bounder, muting it and letting both men reach their bags. Metiuire lined a sharp one down the a! that Werden corraled, the sacri- fice putting men oa second and third. Me- Cauley puta bounder at Walsh, who juggled the ball just a moment and had to content himself with getting out the batsman, while Murphy scored. Waish then made an error on Griffin's grounder and Donovan scored. Dowd hit to Tight fur # base and put Griffin on third, but Hatfield went out from Gilbert to first. ‘The only Oriole run was secured in the sec- ond ia: bert was bit, Walsh sacrificed Hatfield to first, Robinson bit for a base to cen- ter. Griffin made a good effort to catch the runner at the plate, but his throw was a trifle wide. McMahon's sacrifice put Robinson on third and MeGraw went down on bails, but was cleverly run down between first and second by Dowd when he tried to steal. Washington went out in order in the latter half. In the third, after Welch had struck out, Jobnson reached first on Hatfield's famble, but Werden having put upa high fly that Hatfield took the runner attempted to steal and was caught. ‘he Statesmen increased their lead in the third by means of four base hits. Donovan's went out to left and MeGuire forced him out at second by hitting to short. McCauley put a good one over second and Griffin did the same. This filled the bases, as McGuire was badly coached, the latter hit looking something like a fy out. Dowd could not get the ball past Gilbert aud McGuire was thrown out at the plate, but Hatield’s hner skimmed out beyond the reach of the third baseman and two runs were tallied. f | game was an easy one to win. ‘The following communication has been re- ceived at this office from a mdent who signs himself “Yorkey” and writes thas: ‘To the Editor of The Eveninz Star: “Kindly permit u first-cleas base ball crank to make a few suggestions as to the make up of the National's for next scason. £ am well ware that we cannot get players like Ward, Brouthers or Duffy on account of a small bank account, but @ strengthening of a few week spots in the prosout team will give us good ball mo ee Soe ay “As catchers, keep and, as a now man to help hia out, I would suggest the sign- ing of Patrick Kollins, now catching for the Cuambersburg (Pa.) aine, Both the Phillies sud Athlitics are after this man. I have seen him cutch Jack Stivetts in first-class style, and beside is a sticker ons par with Maguire. As Pitchers, keep Foreman and Carsey if possible and resign Freeman. ‘This young man will be {in great shape for next scasdn, aud, with Lol- fins to eaten bim, he'll do fine work. Place “Old Cy” on first. He played this bag for Omaha out of sight. Keep Dowd on second. O'Kourke of Columbus wiil come here aud will fit nicely at short. For third base F:ank Ward, iaie of Pittsburg and now at Spokane, will cover a big hole. ‘This wan I have™scen Work and can vouch for his ability us a hitte base runner and a third baseman of the Lili; Joyce style. Coupled with these qualities he eam eqach with great discretion aud ius a voice like old Jack Kiddie. For the ficid keop ‘Law- Fence Patrick,’ only put Lim in right, Gr in center and Donovan im left. ‘hen directors put out @ line for Pat Powers of this year's Luffalo club. I would like Shannon +0 stay as he can jump in and help ont if any of the players get hurt, but if he has left then lot it be Powers. He can get the wen to play to their fullest strength and that is «ll ihe Na- tional players need do to come ont on top very frequently. Keep Hattield ay utility man. 1 might aud that a club or perkaps an ax would be a good thing for Shannon or Powers to use to bring out the latent strength of our preseut ning, ‘Zhey can play bail; the question is, will they? THE LEAGUE CHAMPIONSMIP RACz. The race for the championsluip in the league has become decidedly interesting. Boston crept considerably nearer Chicago yesterday. ‘The New York team went down before the Bostons yesterday just as other teams have done for the past ten days, though yesterdzy's Glasscock bad a decidedly off day, making two costly errors. In the face of very inditierent support Coughlin pitched a good game, keeping his head at sil times and working hard to overcome the tremendous odds against him. Nichols was fairly effective, though wild, hitting Glasscock twice and Whistler once. The local boys played like flends, running bases like Indians and making unexpected double plays thut not only Buekicy surprised but delighted the crowd. knocked his thumb ont of joint early game and was obliged to retire, Burrell his place behind the bat. Whistler pla; where Connor usualiy does, but did not honor the position. ‘There was great cheering when the bullétin board showed Chicago's defeat at Cleveland. PIRATICAL EFFORTS OF THE ASSOCIATION. A Pittsburg dispatch says: During the recent trip of the Pittsburg elub to Chicago no lees than six agents of the American Association approached Pittsburg’s tempted to decoy four of the best players into the association camp for next season. ‘The piszers approached were Shushart, Bierbaucr ley and Mark Baldwin. Baldwin was of- fered $17,500 to signa three-years’ contract. ‘The agent informed Baldwin that he would straighten out the dificulty between himself and ‘the Columbus club and also fix the es- trangement between Baldwin and Vonder Ahe. Seige Descended From Kevolutionary Stock. Capt. Gustavus A. Hull, U.S. A. (retired), died on Sunday evening of pneumonia at his home in San Francisco. Capt. Hull was born at Fredonia, N. Y., on April 18, 1827. He was aston of James Hull and Betsey Crosbs, son and daughter of revolutionary sires. His boy- hood was spent in Ohio, and when he was @ young man his father moved to Louisville. ‘There Capt. Hull and his brothers followed their father's, business. that of printing and publishing. jentified himself early with the whig party and later with the republican party. He took an active part in the move- ments of the Union men of Kentucky in keep- ing that state from joining the confederacy. ——— eee A Big Fire in Philade!phia. A big firo was started about 2 o'clock yester- day afternoon in Phillips & Cunningham's large oil store, 136 North Delaware avenue, Phila- delphia. In twenty minutes the entire build- ing was a great furnace of flames, and a pillar of dense smoke ascended for hundreds of feet in the air. Philip and Charlies Porter, of En- gine Company No. 29, were injured by exploding oil, and Frank Lowry, of Truck D, was hurt by a falling ladder. Ali were sent to the hospital. The lames spread to the ware house of Jessup in Hatfield stole, a bail having put Dowd on third, but McLaughlin tlied to MeUraw. in the fourth Van Haltren led off witha single to left and went to third on a wild pitch, yet he could not score. Gilbert's line bounder Settled squarely into Hatticld’s bands and the runner could not stir. Walsh put up a fly into left that Murpby reached after good run. He threw it so well that Van Haltren, who had started for home, changed bis mind and went buck. McGuire ‘made a rather poor throw to third to catch bim, but Hattield made a fine eateh and saved an error. Then Robinson flied out to Murphy also. In this inning Washington made the last run of the game. Foreman was hit, and after be went to third on a good single to right by Murphy he tallied when Lawrence Patrick was forced at second by Donovan's hit to Welch. Donovan stole second and went to third when Robinson threw so that both Walsh and Welch, getting the sun im the eyes, had to squat in the field to avoid being hit.’ ‘Lhe next two men went out. Vaitimore went out in order in the fifth, and though Washington did not score a manreached third. Griiin hit safely to left and Dowd put ® skitumer toward second that Welch just man- vged to block. After Hatfield had tlied to Wer- den McLaughlin bit to Walsh aud a double re- sulted, ‘there was a close call in the sixth. Johnson Went dows ou balls, and after Werden, to the ies peltaht of ‘he spectators, bad struck out Van Haltren Lit a dail that bounded just over MeLaughlit ead. Jounson reached third, ot try torun in when Van Haltren yan down to sccond. MeLaaghiin was playing bebind Dowd to get the throw, and when he saw that Dowd to let the bal! go by him and Van was touched out. ‘Then Gilbert struck out. In the latter half, afer two were out, Donovan hit to venter for a base aud MeGuire was hit, but Mic~ Cauley fied out. i enth Walsh led off witha hit to Hobinson strnek out and McMahon hit to Dowd, g Walsh. MeGraw went down on baiis, but Weick tied to Musphy. Washington Went out im order. One-half of the cighth was played, and as Eaitimore did not tally any runs the game was called. Johuson was out when Werdoa Bit to center fora base and s double play by Fore- man, MeLaugulin aud AleCauley put the side out. Washington made nine hits and two errors and Lalunore ix hits and two errore. ores Oamus. Milwaukee bit the ball very hard after the fiith inning, mucking five runs in the vighth. Louisville could not bat and vo the game went te the brewers, 8 to2. Stratton and Priggs, and Dwyer and Vaughn were the batteries Malwaukee mace fourteen hitsand three errors, and Loaisviile ive hits and one orror. Boston scored three runs in the ninth and tied the score with the Athleties, 6 to6. Then the game was culled on account of darkness.
