4 THR EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON. D.c. MO THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON Commissioner Donglass kas enlled n meeting of the exceutive committee erd the committee on invitation which went to Detroit to secure the meeting of the next nationai encampment of the Grand Army of the Kepublic in this city. ‘Those committees performed their work weil and the citizers of Washington recognize the value of their services and are gratified at the fesults which they did so much to ac- complish. Tho labersof assuring the neces- sary financial support fer the entertaimment of the encampment and of secu: ptr Of the invitation tendered by the c1iy Lave now been performed, and Washington has before it the vaster and more important task of provid- ing for the proper reception and entertain- ment of the host of veterans that will come to Washington next year, and asa first step of selecting the committees who shall represent the city in the various branches of this labor. These selections should be made with the Greatest care. Nothing should be done over hastily. The best men—tbose in whom all will have confidence and who will be active workers—shonld be choser. Full appreciation of the magnitade of the task to be performed should mark every step in the city's prepara- tion for this event from the very first to the last. The attondance at the next encampment will undoubtedly be larger than ever be- fore in the history of the Grand Army of the Republic. Already in almost every state in the Union the ex-soldiers are making arrange- ments to visit the national capital. Many who have not visited Washington since they marched in the grand review in June, 1465, are now eagerly anticipating gain looking upon the city thet their valor ai to save, and itis belived that the number of visitors will reach atleast a quarter of a million. For not only will the old soldiers themselves come, but they will bring their wives and children, and thea there are the Women's Relief Corps, the Union Veterans’ Union and other kindred army organizations. There sbould Le the most per- fect harmony not only among the citizens, but between the citizens and the Grand Army men, so-that all may work for the sole object of refecting Lonor upon Washington by the manuer in whick the capital will receive and care for those who were her protectors. —— The Commissioners &: time-wasting controverey between the health office and the building ix the con- dition of the Threlkeld building, by ordering the repairs to be made, which the health ofti- eer pronounced necexsary, thus giving the benefit of the douvt (if there was any doubt ty the health of the school chilire:. The children will now be kept from school only for the timo which is re- quired to remedy the unsanitary conditions inside and outside the Threlke!d building and will not be further delayed to await the out- come of a prolonged war of words in the Dis- trict building. Next year the inspection of the sanitary condition of the schools will dcubtless be made a sufiicient time before the date fixed for their opening to permit their thorough ex- amination and repair and any unavoideble ac- sompanying controversy over the work to be disposed of before the session begins. Eetweea @ constantly enlarging vacation and list of holidays the school term is already too short for acity which has many untaught children of the school age within its limita, and it ought not to be further reduced by delay in the neces- sary work of removing unsanitary conditions. ——_—_ore——_- The United States is not the only country that is not prompt in recognizing the memories of the men whose names appear upon the pages of its history. It is on the eve of the celebra- tion of the discovery of America at Chicago that-the Spanish government provides for the erection of « sepulchre for the remains of Chrietopher Columbus in the nave of the eathe- ral at Havana. Such an honor, if due at all, was surely due before this lapse of time. The tardiness which hes characterized the Grant monument movement has long been a subject of censt.re among Americans, and while perhaps we are in no position to criticise the public spirit of Spain we can at least extend intelligent sympathy. —_—_—-2-—_____ ‘There is a disposition manifested among the iconoclasts of today to prove that Captain Kidd was no bloodthirsty pirate; that, on the con- trary, he was a very conscientious and capable mariner. It is even intimated that he sang hymns and contributed to charities. This tendency isto be deplored. It is encugh for this century that Ignatius Donnelly should wrestle with the remains of Shakespeare or that William Tell should be proclaimed a myth, without assailing the memory of Captain Kidd. Onur landmarks of romance are. like the trees of cur forests, becoming entirely too scarce to be obliterated with impunity. —_—-2s—___. Governor Pattison took a very decisive step in calling the Pennsylvania senate together to consider the alleged connection of Treasurer Henry K. Boyer and Auditor General Thomas MeCamant with the Bardsley irregularities. ‘The case, however, is a grave one, and calla for decisive treatment. The senate to which their ease will be submitted is largely. republican, but it is nowhere expected that the considera- tion of party fellowship will have any effect. ‘The offense charged is too black to be white- washed, 1f fairly proven. 2 Expectation is keyed up high in all of the so- ¢alled pivotal states—New York, Ohio and Towa. Massachusetts and Nebraska, while not strictly in the list. are points of national inter- est, the latter because of its nearly equal di- vision between three parties, and the Bay State Decanse of the youth and snap of the leading candidates. 1 ‘The American girl who wrote to Tolstoi asking what she should do with a large surplus of cash she had on band might have received Just as good advice without going so far. There are several cities in which it would have been anggested that she could do good work by em- ploying men to remove garbage. However, it ‘is not likely that anything so prosaic as garbage wouid strike the faney of a young woman who yearns for correspomtence with » novelist. — = Tennyson is eighty-two and is still producing plays that Ics-en his fame, if poor work now can reduce the place occupied in the vaihalla of poetry by one of the grest immortals, ee Utteraness of liberal leaders in England show that home rule is to continue fhe great prinei- ple mm the policy of their party.
