CRownS AT THE WHARF. People went down to the wharf all day long to see the wreck, and the river was lined with forms until the evening. The Macalester went down on her regular trip at the usual time and tbe boat eareened far over to one passed the wreck and the passenge there was a large crowd, rushed over to see the poor old steamer as she lay in her grave. The steamer Washington of the Norfolk line came into the slip just after the Corcoran had Leen taken away from the Leary. She was in the stream for some time, waiting for a chance to get to her wharf, but she could render no assistance, especially as she had a large num- ber of passengers on board, and it would bare been a useless exposure of their lives. ‘The retailers of produce who are entitled to stand in this lime should be given as conve- nient @ position as possible. But in assiguing rtain localities, if it is done, consideration jould be given to the larger portion of the public which would be benefited. Referring to the charge that the market com- pauy are “levying tribute” upon all the farm- ers and gardeners in sight of the marke house I would state that upon careful investi- gation I have found no case where farmert or gardeners are called upon by tbe company to pay anything, except those who are given & space on the pavement adjoining the market house. This aggregates a suilicient amount, however, so that I think the market company should be required to remove all ac- cumulation of dirt which arises from the oc- cupying of the pavement by the farmers’ teaws. representatives of the compeny express a willingness to do this as soon as the new pavement is down, so that the street can be properly cleaned. Referring to that portion of the letter which charges that whole- sale farmersure tuking advantage of the pres- & part of the large crowd from Marshall Hall last night, arriving at the dock between 1 and 2 o'clock this morning. Capt. Bell’s Career. Capt. Bell is an old resident of Georgetown and he has followed the water for a number of years. He was on the steamer when the fire broke out, having remained on account of the late hour which the boat reached the wharf this morning. The captain is regarded as one of the most competent river captains here and is as fam iar with the tributaries of the Potomac as any other boatman. Some years ago, when he owned the steam tug Belle Haven, that boat took fire and was destroyed, and the tug Poto- mac. which was also ewned by him, was de- stroyed some time afterward. Following these misfortunes Capt. Bell’s store, in Georgetown, was destroyed by fire, and now this fire came on when the captain was in bis berth, although he got out before there was any danger of losing his life. up to their knees in the mixture of water and charred wood, and by 10 o'clock their faces pre- sented the appearance of a half-washed min- strel troupe. Nothing was saved from the steamer. The upper works were burned eutirely off and there is but a small portion of the lower deck remaining solid and that is burned half through. "The furniture is all gone and the en- gines are warped so that they are quite de- stroyed. No IDEA WHAT CAUSED THE FIRE. Capt. Bell, standing with one hand on a burned stanchion, said to a reporter in a melancholy tone: ‘She is all gone. ‘There is nothing to save and her life is ended. She is a total wreck and 1 do not think that there will be any value left m her. Her engines will be worth only what they will bring as old iron and her wood work will be but a char. Her bull is undoubtedly burned, and I do not see what there 1s to be done with her unless it is to get her away from here and break her up for what may be in her. The sents, which were numcrous and beautiful as well as ureful, made a fine display.
