Egloff of the water de- partment as he staggered into the office of the chief clerk of the water office this afternoon shortly after 1 o'clock. ~ His face resembled a piece of raw beef, and” his bands were terribly burned. The aceides happened at the gus works of the Washington Gaslight Company at the foot of 12th street southeast. Inspector Egloff was engaged in reading the water meter, which is located in a pit about 150 fect from the gas works, when au explosion oc- curred. It seems that when he entered the pit he de- tected the escaping gus and warned the ‘man who was with him not to strike a match.
