2 THE LAST NIGHT IN CAMP. ‘The Washington Light Infantry Strike ‘Tents at Ocean View. (WMEY WILE REACH WASHINGTON TRIE EVESINO— SOME PLEASANT INCIDENTS DURING SATURDAY AXD SUNDAT—A FISHING TRIP AND ITS EFFECTS “REFLECTIONS 48 TO THE MILITARY VALUE OF YaE ENCAMPMENT. Bpectal Correspondence of Tw Evewrwe Stan. Camp Moone, Oczax View, August 23, 1891. Like the Arabs of old they have folded their tents, but as Jesse Grant would say, they haven't “went yet.” The Washington Light Infantry, the Corcoran Cadets and Dr. Hamil- ton Leach are still at Ocean View, but Camp Moore looks as if lightning had struck it or the Ciceronian eloquence of Capt. John Miller had Biown across it. The tents sre down and ked and ready to ship to Washingtoi just five minntes after 10 o'clock this morn- ing the first tent fell. It was s company C tent, from which Capt. Ourand had removed the pegs last night so as to be in read- ines. The personal baggage and cots,to alarge extent, bad been previously removed to the dancing pavilion, where the men will sleep to- night After the first tent went down today others followed in rapid snecesmon. In five minutes the camp looked as if lightning had struck it. In ten minutes itresembled the scene of a big dynamite explosion, and. five minutes | after, the sweep of a big Western cyclone gave overy appearance of having passed over eamp. In «short time every tent had been folded and all that was left of Camp Moore were the platforms and a mixed-up mass of trunks and baggage. There was one tent standing, however. It was the canvas-covered structure whose flaps have ever been open during the en- campment to the weary stranger or the hungry soldier. AN CAPT. WHEELER. ‘The tent, including the white shams and ice cheat, has been the property of Capt. Childs and Capt. Wheeler, who are averagely good honest fellows, but who oceasionally disport themselves in’ all the glory of a soldier's uni- form, set off with the insignia of staff officers. ‘This tent was the last to come down. and then it came down over the heads of a pleasant ‘ty, who were having an exceedingly good me ‘in the interior. This party, who have tly enlivened the camp all during the week, fis received still further means of enlivenment Jately by the arrival of Captain and Mrs. Shwarz Today, with the tents down and three Dig calendars in the tent marking Sunday owning the 23d, a quiet time by the «eas has been enjoyed by the men. Bathing has been « feature, and a number of boats on the bay show thatcither apleasant, cool breeze is being indulged in or that some of the men and maidens, too, as is shown by the flutter of a white dress or some of the boats, have forgotten the proverbial end of the Sanday school boy and are fishing. VARIOUS KINDS OF FISHING. Speaking of fishing. there have been various kinds of it down here. Some of it con- sists of hauling in a line with a big sea fish on itevery winute. At other times it consists of tome fish, big rolling waves and a generally uneasy feeling among many of the party. Yes- terday a party went fishing and Tue Star cor- respondent went along. Hedid not go tocatch fish, but he mw the waves. It may be said Tight here im parenthesis that he did not cateh euy Gb. CAPT. MILLER'S COMPLEXION. Capt. John S& Miller, however, did eatch some fish. He alvo caught a color some what detweon a pale terra cotta and a peachblow. Capt Miller is too much tanned to tura pale, Dut Le used every possible exertion to reach that stage. Usually Capt. Miller is either elo- quent or ailont. On this occasion bis remarks were confined to such expressionsns “Boys, you think il feel better when I get ashore?” and this is my first fishing trip thi+ season, und, With the blessing of the Lord, it will be my last.” Dr. Hamilton Leach sat very quiet. He was not so oppressiveiy anxious to get but in » quiet way Dr. Leach east more than one longing look at the shore and held his bond for some time over his month. “Bom, you must be a using de wrong hand,” said the amiable darkey who rowed the bout tothe only man not catching fish. In obedience to superstition the mane hancis, but it did not go. Other fishing parties have been like unto this and many men have come ia with big strings of fish, while others equally as handsome have returned with « far- goneness in their stomachs whieh reminds ‘them of the rumbling, uneesy surface of an earthy sake. THE LAST SIGHT. Tomorrow moruing at 6 o'clock the boys will take the traiv for Norfolk and shortly after 7 will embark for Washington, and as Tae Stan goes to press the Infantry and Cadets will be reat way from the old town toward eveu ov a summer vacation every Wash- ington heart turna. FAREWELL TO THE DEAR GraLs. Tomorrow morning. carly as will be the start, there cam be no doubt that a large num- ber of people, and many, if not the major por- tion, will be wearing the white dress which so Deeom Have ly wets off the summer girl. Infantry enjoyed themselves? In a quiet way there cau be no doubt of this Asa | general rule the enjorments have not been det or bikwriows, as might be found at Atlan- tue City or other resorts, but the men have been weil supplied with pleasant sarroundings in the way of good Sahing, boating and bathing, not to speak of some more than hespitable trentinent from the clubs situated near here, and Mr. W. Pannill, who gave the command for an oyster roast. The oyster roast, as has been Mentioned before, wus a grand big success Mr. Pannill ie an energetic host, and with the amber of shuckers at work every ono was sup- plied. | Schwarz got off and appropriat SS ‘TRE CLUB'S STEWARD. The Ocean Pleasure Cinb has been lavish in its hospitality. Among the members of the club is a well-known Washingtonian, Mr. Ton; Rodier, who has worked several pounds of fi off in an endenvor to entertain the boys. ~ Friday evening the club gave a dinner to the Indies at camp. which in every way was a sue- cess. Dr. Hamilton Leach was the master of ceremonies, while the host was Judge Mur- dangh of Eik fame. In the evening the entire party, soldiers, Indies and hangers on, went down 'to Norfolk and enjoyed the performance of “Faust” by the Annandale Hamilton Opera Company. A sxrmoriem Darcr. Satarday morning Capt. Ourand and com. pany C gave a skirmish drill with blank cartridges on the parade grounds. The drill was well executed, comprising firing standin, kneeling and lying down and rallying to repel cavalry. Along with company C ow their di were a considerable number of small boys, who entangled themselves in the men's legs ina wild search and scramble for empty cartridge shells, to be preserved as relies of the late war. Company C did work in the Infantry skirmish, although a quicker rally would have been a necessity had cavalry been charging. The squad rally of infantry to repel horsemen, as exemplified yesterday, is clearly open to the objection that one squad would in all probability be firing into some other squad. And now asto military affairs in general at Camp Moore. The men ‘have been well drilled in the extended order drill. They have been drilled in the guard mount and they ave added an excellent movement and im- proved largely in the dress parade. Outside of this it is x question whether the military ond of the camp has not been somewhat teglécted. MILITARY DISCIPLINE LAX. The discipline has been lax,and when the word is used it is meant to describe something like a string which is tied at neither end. Guard duty has been @ farce, and really the main occupants of the guard tent bave been the colored servants, who on one night went to a ball and returned in a hilarious condition. It is one of the unfortunate things of the late action of Congress in refusing an appropria- tion for the National Guard that with the men going off as separate organizations discipline and quick readiness to obey orders have been thrown to the winds. This is specially unfor- ate for the privates and the non-commis- sioned officers. This year in all the battalions the men have fallen almost entirely out of the habit of respecting the authority or obeying without question the orders of the honr, as was the general rule at the last two THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON. Correspondence of The Evening Star. ‘Bocxaaipor ALM Srarxos, Va., August 23, 1891. ‘This grand old place, 2,000 feet above sea level, nestled behind the lofty peaks of the great North mountains, which tower severa hundred feet higher, with its salubrious aud invigorating climat eand its life-giving waters, which have won for it so much renown, hath charms for all. Of the location of the springs awriter says: “In an amphitheater almost as round as a bowl, they lie in the firm but kindly embrace of the encircling hills, to which Claude Melnotte’s description of a ‘deep vale shut out from the rude world by Alpine hills’ might well apply, and te the lawns the superb im- agery of Everett, that ‘nature had spread a carpet fit to be pressed by the foot-ateps of the descending gods." The place is now under the management of Col. George L. Peyton, who was for sixteen yeary the managing director of the famous Greenbrier White Sulphur Springe, W. Va. The cuisine is in charge of Capt. Wm. camps at Fort Washington. This, be it i / FAKE POLICEMAN. understood, does not apply particularly to the infantry, but is the sad case throughout the brigade, end wil! result still- more dis- astrousiy next year if a general enenmpment is not held. It is well enough enough for men on guard to make a joke of having their guns stolen while they are supposed to be patroling their guards, but it does not have an inclina- tion to put ideas of real soldierly qualities in the m@. Fun is fan, and discipline is disci- pline. ‘THE CORCORAN CADETS TAKE THE PALM. ‘Let men on encampment take their wild fun outside the eamp and act as soldiers in the highest sense of the word in camp. In guard duty it may be said right here that the Corco- ran Cadets have carried off the palm. The Ca- dets have done well on this trip aud deserve high credit, and to explain a point again, so have the Infantry. although there have been “lapus Lingais,” as Sam Weller might have said, Another question. looked at from « mili- tary standpoint, was the advisability of break- ing camp this morning and having the men sleeping in a pavilion tonight. From the point of view of convenience the move was a good one; from the point of view of gaining military knowledge an exceedingly bad one. If the men are to gain, besides a lot of fun, portion of military knowledze, quick action is what they areafter. Breaking and making cam should be a matter of only a short time, an whatever time it was necessary to get the men up, camp should have been broken just before the start. QUICK ANP ACCURATE DRILL. Speaking on the other side again the com- mand while here have shown a quickness and aceuracy in drill which is little less than mar- velous, and officers and men should be com- plimented highly on the efficiency which they have reached. ‘The command yesterday morning had a dis- appointment. Col. Moore was expected on the 11 o'clock train. The entire command was tarned out and lined up in front of the station, the band played and everybody looked up the track ‘The train did not appear and the men tthe shade. Pretty soon a whistle blew and the train put in an appearance. The boss jined up again and the band _played—not “An- nie Laurie.” The train stopped. but no dis- tinguished looking, white-smustached gentle- man alighted aud Capt Kelley and Capt © tion to themselves, but the colonel is yet to make his appearance. \ ‘THE DELLE OF THE VIEW. Last night there was a ball and the men danced with ail the vigor incidental to military life. The dance was a full dress oue and invi- tations were iwued. Thé povilion in which the Third Artillery Bund played and the men whirled im the mazy was xu:ly decorated with the and national colors, and a large nun- ber of Norfolk were present. The com- mittees were: Dr. H. E. Leucb, Lieut. Chas. Ebert, Sergt. J. B. K. Lee, Cupt. Chas CM. Loefiier, Sergt. A. M. Muzzey, private W. J. master ef ceremonies. Serg?. Ma} Jeme F. C., who is famous in his line. STRENGTH-GIVING WATERS. ‘Those who seek these waters for their ills, as well as those who come for rest and pleasure, are each afforded every facility for their full application and enjuyment. Col. Peyton says to the sick, “Leave your carcs behind, come here and drink these waters and bo well,” and to the well he says, ‘Come and rest and enjoy yourself and be reinvigorated.” Indeed, one can be quite at home here either at one of the three hotels or in a cottage. One can be serious or gay, fashionable or unfashiunable, conven- tional or unconventional, just as it’ suits, at “Rock Alum,” and this’ independence is’ its great charm. One may more easily compre- hend that this is the veritable period of summer resi when noticing the leisurely hob-nobbing together on the wide piazzas of the busy men of the cities. Politicians, lawyers, millionaires, railroad magnates, financial ‘notables, business men and women and the more common folk each and all taking the nectar from the same health’s fountain. Some of the cureseffected by these waters are truly wonderful, showing the great virtue in them for certain diseases. One case, among several called to my attention, I will mention, as I saw and talked with the gentleman, now in ‘ood health. Mr. Jones, a brother of Gov. ones of Alabama, was given up by his attend- ing physicians to die, and he was brought here, though neverexpected to get well. His trouble was chronic diarrbea, and he had been reduced so that when he came his weight was only 118 pounds. After ten weeks’ use of the alum waters he recovered and now weighs 156 pounds. REOULAD HADITUES. Here are those who have come, year after year, ever since the discovery of the great cura- tive powers of these waters. Patients are sent here by the most celebrated physicians in thi country. Among the habitues here now are: ‘M. W. Provost of Baltimore, Md., who has been coming for the past fifteen ‘years. He arrives punctually on the 8d of July und remains until the 10th of September. Mr. J. Hamilton of Chicago, Mr. Judson Watkins, Mrs. Wynn, Mrs. Wallace. Mrs. Bloomberg and daughter of Rich- mond, Mr. Donnally, a large planter of New Orlentig, with ie, familys Daisy Fitz- ugh of Lexington, Ky., a journalist of consid- erable note in her seetion, and Mrs. Donaldsor. of Cincinnati. Washingtonians here now and recently are: Mrs. Dr. G. A Harris, Mra. B. E. Rood, the Misses Custis, Mra. E.'Newman and daughter, Lawyer A. A. Tunstall and family, Dan'l W. it ee family, Mr. J. B. Shellenberger and Lieut. J. Parker of the navy and his charming wife. Among the guests I notice Judge Welborn of totam Gen, laine and wife, and Gen. Jack- son of Georgia, the latter of Mexican war fame; Judge Lacey of tho Virginia supreme conrt, ex-Gov. Boydton of Georgia, Mra. Gov. Wilson and daughter of West Virginia, Mira. Wright and Mrs. HH. Bloomberg of Richmond. Mrs. Bloomberg, o lady of wealth and culture, and who did so much for the entertainment of her friends and guests, was called home last week, her residence having been broken into and robbed of several thousand’ dollars worth of valuables, including filty pieces of silver, resents at her marriage. Her many friends Bere deeply regret her great loss, ‘A PROGRESSIVE EUCURE PARTY. Mrs. Jno. MeChesney of Alabama, a leader of society, gave a progressive cuchre party on Friday, so much enjoyed by all, more especially the prize winuers, as the prizes were handsome and fitting the ‘occasion. Gen. Lawton of Georgia carried off the first prize, while Mrs Indge Walker of Kichmond won the second rize. Pihe reigning beltes at Rock Alum are: Miss Daniel of Rounoke, Va., s relative of Senator Daniel, who has now been two seasons ‘‘on the lint;’" Miss Donaldson of Cincinnati, Miss Irma St. Clair-Abrams of Florida, Mrs. Frank Helen of Covington, Ky., and Miss Gaillord of Charleston, 8.
