4 THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: -Auguet 20, 1891. FE LVENING eTaR wees regular and permanent circulation In Washington three Times larger than that of any ether paper tm the city. As a local NEWS paper and Advertising Medinm it hae ne competitor. —— Two things were shown at the Pennsylvania republican convention yesterday: First, that Mr. Blaine holds his place fully in the affec- tions of Pennsylvania as ber “favorite son,” and, second, that the republicans of the state do not mean to allow Messrs. Quay and Cam- @ron to rehabilitate themselves in public and party credit, by mounting the Blaine boom and leading off in forcing a premature nomination. ‘There is no manner of doubt that Mr. Blaine, if he consents to run, will be supported by Penn- sylvania with ail the fervor and enthusiasm of © first love, but Mess. Quay and Cameron Beve notice served upon them that they are not to interfere in this little love affair, for their own personal benefit, and especially as the: are only very recent admirers of Mr. Blaine. Mr. Quay is turned down in # pretty decisive way. Instead of dictating the whole program @f proceedings in the convention, as it was an- nounced would be the case, his platform, his ‘eandidutes and his scheme for riding a popular presidential nag toward nis own ends, bave all been repudiated. + —- Whatever the decision as to the proposition to increase the amount of the garbage contract, the contractor ought, pending such decision, to execute it fully on its present terms. Itis a thing of the greatest importance to the health and comfort of the community. A large pro- ion of the numerous complaints are well- founded. But ina matter of this kind, where responsibility is divided betweén the house- hold and the collector, it must be borne in mind that in some of the cases blame for non- collection rests on the former. ‘There should be no delay on the part of those charged with delivering. And the delivery ought not to be made inconvenient for the collectors, who have 8 wide ‘erritory to cover each day. ——— To American science and sciertista were de- ‘voted several pages of yesterday's Stax, many eolumas of letter press description having been supplemented by twenty-seven illustra tive cuts. This enterprise, which is the usual of Washington's newspaper, was not at the expense of the general news of the day; nor ‘was it to the exclusion of a single feature of the great regatta and the telegraphers’ conven- tion. For Twe Sran’s extra, issued promptly late in the afternoon, covered everything that took place after its regular edition and left nothing to be desired. ‘Tux Stan has been widely praised for its suc- cess in the news field yesterday. It will en- deavor in the future, aa it has dove in the past, to deserve the appreciation of the public so freely extended at all times. ——_o+e—____ The ocean record is all the time being short- ened. The White Star Teutonic now beats the best previous time, that of the White Star Ma- Jestic, and has got the thing down to five days, Sixteen hours and thirty-one minutes. This is a reduction of more than an hour anda half. ‘The gratifying feature in these feats is the fact that they are accompanied by no increase of danger with the increase of specd. It cannot, apparently, be long before the ocean gre; hounds will be running between Queenstown and Sandy Hook in five daya. $s —___.
