4 “THE EVENING STAR. Ww a GTON: MONDAY... August 17, 1891 ‘chosBy 5. NOTES Sue EVENING STAR hes a regular and permanent cire: Washington will have the pleasure from and after tomorrow of greeting during the week = number of widely different but interesting Dovties of men who will gather hore in annual session. The American Association for the Ad- yancemort of Science, which convencs tomor- row, is on of the greatest societies devoted to scientitic studies in the whole world. It com- prises in its membership most of the able in- vestigators who have given this continent a prominence in the scientific development of the present age. Besides these men of pure science, the two telegraphers’ bodies which will meet bere on Wednesday, and whose | occupation touches the domain of prac- | tical science, will illustrate to some extent the progress of electricity in one of its most important applications. There is something historical in both the Old Timers and the Mili- tary Association, the one running back to Morse and 1844, the otner to the institution of military telegraphy in the United States. To those addicted to outdoor pastimes the Deginning of the session of the National Oars- mon ¢ Association tomorrow and the regatta on ‘the Potomac, opposite this city, are events of supreme interest. Washington has room for all these national bodies and others besides. The Rechabites are coming next year, and intend to celebrate here ‘heir semi-centennial celebration. The national capital is the handsomest, the most pleasant, the most suitable place for such annual or other regular meetings, with its vast array of things to show and contiguity to the most memorable scenes in American history. ena ona A note from an official of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad says that Tae Stam was misin- formed in its statement that the Koyal Blue Tine trains ad returned to the use of soft coal. He adds ‘We have not only not returned to the use of soft coal on the Royal Blue line, but have no fnteniion of doing it,and furthermore we e pect beiore a great while to be able to do away With the burning of soft coal on onr suburban trains running into ard out of Washington. Further, we expect by the Ist of October to have our Washington suburban trains equipped ‘with entirely new coaches, which are now Leing Dusit for us by the Pullman company.” ‘This will be very satisfactory information for the traveling public, and especially for the cus- tomers of the suburban trains here. ‘The aboii- tion of the soft-coal nuisunce on these trains, by the substitution of the best quality of coke, cannot fail to add greatly to the popularity of the road. Now, if the Baltimore and Ohio com- pany will go a step further and doubie-track the Metropolitan branch all its length, they will make themselves wholly solid with the pub- lie, and wil! gain enough additional business to make the expense of construction a paying in- Vestmen’ + A promising crop review in the United States with a gloomy outiook abroad for the staple crops that support life, taken together, give rise to well-based predictions that American cereals will be exported in larger quantities than usual and will command much higher prices. With an export of wheat amounting 0 200,000,000 bushels, all required in Europe, it would seem that the low average export pric for five years, 87.1 conte per bushel, must go away up above that point. Figures made now are apt to be more or less deceptive, but a fair estimate is probably an increase of 25 to 20 per cent, although it may be higher than that. ——___+eo—____ Arthur J. Riggs, the colored republican ean- didate the legislature from Lamilton county, Ohio, says that the colered vote will decide things in Ohio and that the republican ticket will be elected with several thousand ‘votes to spare. Maj. McKinley isn’t allowing these assurances to betray him into restful fnertin, however. —— When Civil Service Commissioner Roosevelt faye that “the ward worker who is simply in politics for the office, is a curse to the com- younity” he utters a truth that is true in every place and worthy tobe used as a legend to be placed over the object lesson of American pol- ities, the corrupt manipulation of election and nomination machinery. eae As famine in Russia is likely to help Ameri- can wheat-raisers, so famine in China may aid American rice-prodicera. Our people do not rejous over others’ misfortune, but do rejoice heartily over our ability to farnish their food apply. It's an ill wind that blows nobody any ood. —— It was an impressive event—the memorial in Wes er Abbey in honor of the late James Russell Lowell, with Archdeacon Farrar aa orstor.
