Of those present almost | 1,300 were from Chicago, while others came | from villages and cities hundreds of miles | away. There were no miraculous cures reported, | [ae have been effected in previous years, but many of the pilgrims claim to have received di- rect benefits from their supplications. Sseuna a a BURGLARS IN PETTICOATS. Mrs. Robinson of Milwaukee, Who Was Robbed, Loaned the Thieves Money. Burglars in petticoats are the latest novelty. It ia & sphere into which the most ardent of female rights advocates have not advised an entrance, and the two Milwaukee women who undertook to practice the profession were flat failures. They executed the job neatly enough, but lacked the requisite nerve to keep from ‘talking when suspicion pointed to them. Both burgiers are respectable married women. ‘Mr. and Mrs. James Robinson live at 112 6th street, Milwaukee. Mr. Hobinson iss railroad engineer and was out on the road Monday night. Mrs. Robinson left the house shortly after supper. and when she returned she dis- covered that nearly $100, which she had hidden ina drawer, was missing. The burglars bud entered by breaking in the rear door. Mrs. Robinson told « detective that a Mrs. Payne, who lived om St Paul avenue, knew where the money was. The detective then went to Mra. Payne's house aud accused her of the burglar, She denied it emphatically, but talked wo muc! that the officer took her tothe station. There abe implicated her sister,a Mrs. George Gregg. ‘The detective then went to Mrs. Gregg s house. She also became indignant at the accusation, bus being told that ber sister had confessed Mra Gregg broke down. She denied having any of the money, however, but after a little search the oflicers found $45 in gold neatly slipped under the t. Mrs. Payne after- ward told the officers where to tad #45.52 in ber house. Mrs Robinson declined to prosecute the wouen and they were fined 220 each. It was originally intended that the Gren- adiers should disembark at Portsmouth, and it had been so announced at the war office and in the newspapers. Consequently s large num- ber of people, consisting of the relatives and friends of the returning “exiles” gathered at Portsmouth days ago, intending to welcome the soldiers upon their return to England. The joy of this crowd, when it was anncunced that the Orontes was sighted can be imagined, also can be iniagined their disappointment an anger when it was suddenly made known that the war office officials had for some tne: plained reason changed their mind and that the troop ship was ordered to proceed *o Dover.
