He and Stricker had a cv while the latter wus on bases in the later part of the game, that was some- what costly to the little man they call Cub. ‘A GOOD START. Washington started ont with a brass band. filling the bases in the first by a clean hit by Griffin and a base on balls to MeGuire. No one scored, as Alvord hit to Haddock. For | Boston Brown was hit by a pitched hall, but he came to grief when he tried to steal. Te second inning was built especially for Washing- ton exes. MeQuery hit to center for one base, but he made threc, as the ball went, throuzh both Brown and Duify, and he scored on a very wild piteh. After the next two men were out Murphy went to first on bulls and stole second, scoring when Dowd hit past second for a base. Slat puta long fly in right for two bases, and he and Dowd crossed the rubber when Griftin banged the ball to left center for three. MeGutre hit hard to left, but the ball was cared rs out ona difficult fly to Slat- tery Murphy went to first ona muff by the same man. It was a fly between him and Hat- field and Slattery let the bail fall after getting it in hiv hands Richardson's grounder to Alvord forced Murphy and Haddock went out At first with Alvord’s assistance. HADDOCK ENPROFES. Arthur Irwin came to the conclusion that Haddock might possibly win the game if he remuined in the box and so that young man kept on with his twirling and but two hits were made off him during the remainder of the me. Washington's only hope was in keeping ston from scoring, but it was a vain hope. It was not untii the ‘seventh inning that the Beaneaters began to but with any degree of unanimity, and then they tied the score aud ade enotigh in the eighth to win. Washing- Duffy made a remarkable catch of Foreman’s tly and Mur- hy hit fora base. Dowd lifted a long fly to y near the fence and the foul line, but it was cared for. Slattery went ont on an in- Held hit. In the same inning the Boston men had a taste of the same article. Duffy went to first ou balls and ke and McGeachy were neatly doubled Ly Hatield and MeQuery. Brouthers hit to right center for three bags and Dowd mace a marvelous catch of Murphy's fly into center. A CHEEREESS SEVENTH. The seventh sent a chill down the spine of every enthusiu® present. Brouthers, the first man at the bat, was fortunate enough to get a serateh two-b i that rolled by Al- vord and then sent Slattery tumbling on hie head in Dan rested ‘on third. Murphy hit to Ha who heli Brouthers and th: fi Kichurdson was at the aire gave Alvord the sign that he going to throw to catch Bronthers. Kichardson sent a bad ily to center beliind second that was captured by Dowd after a great run and no score was made. The game might be saved yet. Stricker hit a weak twister to Dowd. and Haddock sprinted past him toward second in just such & way that Dowd was balked. twisted all ovor his arms and two runs scored before it was recovered. Radford then struck out. ‘The home team gave momentary promise in the ninth that it was going to make one of those Garrison finishes that it has been famous for of late. With Fistfleld and Foreman out on infield bite Murphy hit past Richardson for « Lase, and the vutpouring crowd paused for a moment. Dowd smashed one at Stricker, who fumbled it, and both men were safe. Slatte wus ut the bat, and a two-bagger meaut a tic. All held their breath. Slattery swiped at the ball. It went straight up and the crowd turned away disappointed, for it realized that when the sphere feli there would be a Beaueate: below it to gobble it. Richardson was the man underneath and he made no crror. Washington made eight hits aud three errors, and Boston nine hits and three errors. LINERS. Boston again today. ‘The home series ends tomorrow. Not Much Doubt That It Will Come Of ‘Tonight. In deference to the popular manifestation of opinion the St. Paul authorities have made a bluff in the direction of exhansting their legal resources to prohibit tho glove fight between James Hall and Robert Fitzsimmons, and now nothing stands in the way of the affair coming off in accordance with the prearranged pro- gram. Tho bluff was even more pronounced than on the occasion of the Sullivan-Kilrain meeting in Mississippi. As « prelude to that event a portion of the state militia was called into service for the purpose of preventing the proposed participants from boarding the trains, but they boarded thom just the same, and se, too, representatives of tho soldiery of Mimissippi were posted at the state lincs, with orders to provent the jevertholess thoy crowed. Yesterday, movod thereto by the protests of one of the largest and most derocratic raasa moctings ever neld in the state, and tho urgent pleadings of such emi- nent ecclesiasts as Archbishop Ireland, Gov. Mernam issued a proclamation rehearsing the fact that his attention had been called by humerous citizens to the contemplated e1- counter, and then proceeded to enjoin upon all officers whoxe duty by the law might relate to the prevention of the commission of offenses to faithfully execute the laws relating to same, “according to the tenure thereof,” and in de- default to be liable to be dealt with according to the provisions of the statutes. Members of the legal fraternity who were at ‘once consulted in behalf of the, fighters had no hevitency in saying that the text of the docu- ment meant less than nothing, while the mayor and chief of police gave it out that they were not subject to the control of the governor of the state. Sheriff Bean, after taking counsel with Judge Flandreau, gave it out that “he would perform his dutios.” ‘fhis performance took the shape of sending a deputy to the depot in the afternoon to await the arrival of Fitzsimmons and his trainers, Jimmy Carroll and Barney Smith, from White Bear lake. The official was accompanied by Detective Dan Ahern, who had a state warrant, setting forth that Fitzsimmons and his trainors were about to violate the law. ‘The officers could just as well have arrested Hall, who at this very time was resting quictly at a hotel not foui blocks from the court house, but for somo reason it did not suit their purpose to go after him. FITZSIMONS ARRESTED. When, however, the train from the lake roiled in and Fitz and hig friends, attired in gorgeous white flannel shirts, alighted to the platform they were immedintely pounced on and hurried in @ carriage to police headquarters and thence to the municipal court, where Judge Curey was awaiting them. By this time the news of their arrest lad reached the hotels and in a very few minutes the court room was filled to overtlow- ing. While waiting for the commence Fitzsimmons nonchalantly chewed & wad of gum. Just as soon as the crowd was large enough to give u theatrical ai ceedings Chief of Police Clark Inid a formation charging tho defendants with boing about to engage in a breach of peace, and with- out having testimony the justice held Fitzsi mons in a bond of $500, and his associates in bonds of $200 each, to appear and answer on Friday morning. ‘The bonds were quickly given, and with the gaping crowd following at their heels the trio left the court. WDS ARRIVIXG. With each arriving train yesterday fresh de- tachments were added to the small army of rts already on the ground, and last night m corridor cote in the hotels were at a pre- mium. The predictions of the out-of-town people are pretty eveuly divided between tio two men, while the local sports decidedly in- cline toward Hall. The latter, who arrived from Beloit in the afternoon, was undoubtedly in excellent shape, and unless his looks belie him he will give his opponent the fight of his life, He has not an ounce of supertitous flesh on his body, his hands are firm as marble and the veins ou his breast and arms stand out like knotted cords. He looks a couple of inches taller than Fitzsimmons and is rather more Rtiesapi to S$ ORTS. SUMMER_RESORTS. ATLANTIC CITY, N. J. SEA-SIDE—JEKSEY COAST. _IN THE Mou NTAINS, a a ee) oo LY 22, 1891.
