As a local NEWS paper and ertising Medinm no competitor. In» fow days a committee will go to Detroit Dearing an invitation from the citizens of sbington to the Grand Army of the Re- public to hold its next annual encampment in this city. That that committece will be em- powered to offer a most cordial welcome on the part of the people of this city it fs ttnnecessury to say. Already an ample fand bas been sub- scribed to guarantee the expenses of an appro- priate entertainment of the veterans. This fand will undoubtedly be largely increased if the invitation is neeepted, and the committee { Justified in promising hospitalitics on a most as scale, With such a welcome as- gener: : sured it would seem that the claims of Wash- fmgton over other cities to this dis tinction by the Grand Army of the Republic would advocate themselves. While all citizens have a common interest in the national capital, while the attractious of its public buildings, its beautiful streets, its parks and monuments, its museums and the pres- ence of the government appeal strongly to all Glasses, there ure historic associations that put ‘Washington far beyond comparison with other Cities in the interest of the veteran of the war. Here tauch of the history of the war was made; @ronnd Washington, all within an easy day cursion, lie famous battle fields. Tue Stan today gives space to descriptions of many of the incidents recalled by the proposal to hold the great reunion of veterans here. To write of all that the name of the capital city suggests to the veteran who served in the army of the Potomac would be to write almost a history of the war. A reunion of the soldiers of the war Bere would be attended with an interest which no otber city could give it. The citizens of Washington extend the heartiest invitation to the veterans to come and enjoy all that their beautiful city possesses today as well as all the vivid memories of the past which a gathering on the banks of the Potomac would recall. - = report in cireulation yesterday morning Gane pose the new health oficer, had decided to appoint Mr. John H. Mr. Crane is recognized as an honest, energetic, public-spirited citizen, thoroughly well-informed in District affairs, and who has Gone much valuable service to the public, for which he has received very little thanks. The clearing sales of summer furnishings at the various dry goods and fancy goods estubiiahments are Productive of unusual bargains, so that in shop- Ding a dollar ts bringing almost double the return it id earlier in the season. The drawback incident to ‘these clear:nz sales {s that the stocks are much broken and the best styles, colors and desirable sizes are often lacking. The Palais Royal Clearing Sale is ‘Unique, since it is an exception to this rile. Not only are assortinents almost perfect, but the lowest prices are also being quoted. ‘fhe explanation is that the stocks have lately been replenished by importers and manufacturers who were anxious to dispose of the balance of their summer goods. Thus we have this week many new arrivals which have brightened the various departments and made the Palais Royal sooften quoted for new and season- able summer furnishinzs—really desirable bargains.
