A Large Crowd Present Yesterday—The De Kontekt Recital Greatly Enjoyed. Correspondence of The Evening Star. inex Ecuo, July 15, 1891. Yesterday the crowd irercased steadily all from the morning, when the women and children came out for a pienic, until late in the evening. It wasa hot day everywhere but at Gion Echo, where the breeze is always refrosh- ing and the shade delightful, There was the largest attendance that has been ox the grounds since the opeuing with the exception of the 4th. Toward; evening, the crowd increased, a great many people driving out, and the western sky was anxiously watched, for the masses of black, wicked-looking clouds rolled and tumbled, seemingly anxious to spoil as much pleasure as possible, but they evidently repented of their evil designs and sank back into the horizon, leaving a clear field for the moon. Chevalier de kt prrived from the city about 7 oclock and immediately held quite a ption. The chevalier is of Polish birth and ndsome old gentleman of quaint, courtly manner. He, has lived a very varied life of seventy-five years. A born uinsician, he was the petof the court at St. Petersburg and after- wardat the court of Queen Isabella of Spain and the Quecn of Portugal, and at list was made nist to the Emperor William of Ger- wy. His most famous composition ix the Awakening of the Lion,” a descriptive piece, showing the rise of Poleud against her op- | pressors. Lis whoie program was most ertist- teally executed and was greatly enjoyed. The chevalier composgd a new march yesterday, dedicating it to Glen Echo, and presented it io Dir. Kogers, leader of the band, Every one went away delighted with the pisce ahd there was no difiiculty and little de- yin transporting the people back to town after the concert. ‘The only lecture this morning was by Dr. Elliott to the normal class in* the hall of phil- osophy, and his subject was: “The Sun- day School Idea.” While these lectures ure to the normal clas they are very iuteresting to every one who. takes an interest in the work of the Sabbath school. After the band prelude at 2 p.m. there was a lectere by “Prot. His system teaches uot only how to aid and uae the undevelope put how to develop the natural memory te the higicst pitch by the simplest and mont effective ineans. Miss Pierce will give another Skakesperian lecture at 4 p.m. and the evening cntertain- ment will be by Miss Jessie Dalrymple of Phila- delphia, Mies Dalrymple isgan clocutionist of no little ability, and her reading and recitations are unusually entertaining. She is a tal! slender brunette, with a sweet face and manner, and her selections are carefully mude and de- lightfully rendered. ‘omorrow diss Dalrymple will give an enter- tainment in the afternoon, and at 4 p.m. there will be a coucert by assembly soloists, and im the evening Prof. Liberty Tadd, who has had charge of the art department, will give an i lustrated lecture on,"*Michael Angelo, His Life and Work.” BSS Released on Bail. Judge Bradley today accepted bail in £1,000 for Richard Cook, charged with rape. ‘The de- fendant is charged with thzee others of the offense and the Police Court on July 7 held them to bail and committed them, including lant at the time Hannegan was trying to turn the boat inshore is that he may have wanted to show his skill in sailing his craft past the hotel in the face of the rising storm. ENTRANCE TO CELL. ‘When young Hains was taken into custody he taken over to Hampton and lodged im the connty jail. Hampton, the county seat of Eliza- Leth City county, is a'pretiy and rather quaint Virginia village of about 4,000 inhabitants. It is renched from here by a stage line which con- nects at the bridge, the limit of the government reservation, with the Hampton and Old Point electric ear line. Tue STAR men went over this morning to inspect the jail aud the court house where the trial is tobe heli, ‘The road is lined on both sides almost all the way with houses, and the trip is decidedly a pleasant one. The fact that many of the men one passes arc uniformed officers and privates, and old ers from the home, and that’ for « good is in sight of the fort, ean- A other signs of a military post, adils considerably to the interest of the scene. Thin ‘cable, too, that m of the officers are accompanied by very pretty young women. “ The court house is in the heart of the town, just off the main street. Today it was filled to the doors with neat white cots and around on every wile were Bibles and hymnals. ‘The witness stand had three cots in it and two more filled the platform where Judge Peek will sit when the court ix convened on Thursday morning. A Young Men's Christian Associa tion convention is being held in Hampton just now and the court house is being used as a dormitory by the delegates, which accounts for this rather Gnusual furnishing of the bulls of justice. YOUNG WAIN IN 5ATL To the rearof the court house and inclosed ina high brick wall stands the jail.
