The hall was, for the third of a century, the office of the Virginia Midland Railroad Company, but of late many of its rooms have been ‘unoccupied. Now, however, all the stores have tenants. The present building is the only one which has ever stood on its lot, except the log cabins built there in colonial times and remaining there within the memory of men now living. ‘The ordinary histo tory of ‘the cecupation of a building lot in the older portions of Alexandria is, first, acabin frame or log; then a comfort- able two-story wooden house, ther a two or three-story brick house nd.in some cases, later very fine buildirg in modern style.
